Nissan Navara 2003 - Do they all knock their Main Bearings out - Steveieb

Been offered a nice one owner example of this pickup for £1800 with 36K on the clock.

Really tempted to risk buying it against all the warnings on this site.

Are they really that bad?

I think they are like a reverse lottery ticket.

Most of the time you win but if your unlucky then you have to spend a lot of money

It's £1800. At that price, you either take a chance, or don't. If it does fail, then, from reports I've read, there is absolutely no warning at all.One minute it's fine, the next the engine is scrap.

At that price, and with that mileage, I'd take the gamble, myself.

Really appreciate the pragmatic responses I have received to my enquiry.

Planning to get the car checked over by my independent mechanic first . But I am encouraged by your views.

For that money, if the mileage is genuine, i'd give it a whirl.

Then i'd buy a job lot of the correct spec oil and filters, and change the oil and filter every 3k for the rest of the vehicles life, you're several hundred pounds in pocket already, servicing engines is far cheaper than replacing them.

Check if has "Nissan Navarra" wriiten on it somwhere, if it has and it's a D22 Navarra it is likely to be a problem.

The guy that delivers our firewood had a D22 and I mentioned that they have the reputation for self-destructiing the bottom end of the engine he said he hadn't had any problem with it. A year later he turned up in an old Transit tipper-the Navarra had expired with a con-rod through the block - he reckoned I had jinxed it!

Especially about regular servicing. Ill check the current servicing regime when I look at the car again

The problem with the D22 Navarra engine has not got anything to do with the servicing regime - it's a problem with the basic engine build .-conrod bolts, main bearing clearances and oil distribution. Any engine number before 209661 is at risk.
