Vauxhall Vectra C - Ride Comfort / Quality - Harsh ride - TimothyP

Hi Everyone,

I have a Vauxhall Vectra C 1.8 - pre face lift 54 plate. It is what it is - gets me from A to B and has always been reliable except the ride quality.

I know they're not supposed to be as sophisticated in terms of the ride quality as say the Ford Mondeo but rather than soak up the bumps, mine just seems to bounce over bumps. Every little bump causes the car to move up and down. It's not so bad when driving but for passengers it's fairly horrendous to the point no one I work with will come in my car! On the other side of this the car will corner like it's on rails...

It's passed several MOTs and services like this and no one has said anything about the suspension so I'm reluctant to take it to a garage initially.

Is there anything I can look at or check myself or even anyone else having the same issue? The only thing I thought it could be was the car had the wrong tyres on it when I bought it. So I swapped these for 215/55/R16 93H and I've checked the pressures.

Many thanks for any thoughts.

I think you will find its perfectly normal.

Used to get these as hire cars at work. They were not great on ride quality but when driving over speed bumps in the car aprk they were truly appaling. In comparison the Puma we had at the time was far better and that was not supposed to be a comfortable family car.

What wheels/tyres does it have? low profile tyres always compromise the ride quality, you want the maximum ammount of rubber betwen you and the road for optimum ride quality. Tyres also vary in softness, a recent 'Which?' report will give you the best riding tyres, also check the tyre pressures, running them slightly under inflated will improve the ride.

Ahhh... that's disappointing. Looks like I'll need to save some money for something a bit more comfy!

It's the stock 16" Club rims with a 55 profile tyre so plenty of rubber between the wheel and the road. I'll try letting a bit of air out of the tyres. I don't drive massive distances so fuel economy isn't a number one concern.

Thanks!

The way you are describing the 'bounce' and 'moving up and down' makes me wonder if the shockers absorbers are shot.

You haven't described it as rock hard with no movement, which would have me suspecting aftermarket hard or lowering springs having been fitted at some point, and/or standard bushes replaced with nylon sporty things in garish purple.

Presumably you've had a poke nose underneath and inspected the springs etc.

Have you tried a bounce test on it? sometimes it can be illuminating following your own car whilst someone else drives it along undulating roads, with a bit of road positioning you can see how the suspension is reacting all the way round the car.

Tyre spec sounds fine to me unless someone's stuck 50psi in each.

I always found Vectra seats horrid things, for too hard for my delicate little behind.

Yes - bouncing is the right term... you literally hit a bump and the whole car moves... like it's following every contour of the road in a very unpleasant way.

I looked under the car when I bought it - nothing shouting modifications. I was told some of the springs had been replaced but I assume just replaced due to corrosion with OEM or pattern parts.

I know the back of the car bobs around over all the place unless weighed down with people or sacks of sand.

I took some air out the tyres and it seems a little bit better but shocks sounds more sensible.

I'll look up on doing a bounce test.

>> I was told some of the springs had been replaced

I suspect that's your problem. Could the rear springs have been replaced with something stiffer? Has it a tow bar, or evidence of it once having one? Spring assisters?

If it's been lowered the springs will probably be stiffer. Could you find what the ride height should be and measure yours, or compare it with another?
