V6 engines - Ed V

Are there any V6 engines smaller than 2.7 litres? If not, why not? Many reviews of so-called 4-pots mention their clattery, noisy nature.

Mazda Mx3 of the 90s. 1.8 ,v6 ,24 valve.

I used to have a 1999 Mercedes C240, which had a 2.4L V6 engine.

Lexus IS after 2005 were V6 2.0ltr , still made are V6 2.5ltr in the GS IIRC

II've got an old Saab GM900 with a 2.5 V6 outside. Goes very well despite age.

More expensive to make than same capacity 4.

Heavier than same capacity 4.

Not as efficient as a 4 (more internal components thus more friction thus more fuel needed).

Normally less torqey than same capacity 4.

Offset that against being smoother and possibly a little more compact and it makes no sense for everyday cars.

All petrol Lexus IS's after 2005 had. 2.5 ltr. V6 engine, and very nice it is too.

BMW used to do a 2.2 straight six, which was a fantastic sounding engine

That was a lovely engine, one of my all-time favourites. I had it in my Z3 and as you say it made a fantastic sound, with plenty of torque across the rev range, including low-down. 36 mpg on a long run wasn't bad, although not as good as the 2-litre four in my Octavia vRS.

It was so smooth that you could balance a glass of water on the bonnet without it spilling.

Below 2.5 is quite rare. But plenty of 2.5s. Ford used in Mondeos, X types. Suzuki used a 2.5 V6 in the Vitara. Land Rover Freelander mk1 V6 2.5 and other Rovers, some 45s also had a 2.0 V6

Of course F1 cars are now v6 1.6. Brabus also developed a 1.4 V6 using two smart engines.

I first encountered it in a Z3 too. Roof down, the beautiful sound off that thing could turn a nun into a hooligan.

Triumph introduced a 1.6 straight six, later enlarged to 2.0 and then 2.5 - used in the Vitesse version of the Herald, the GT6 version of the Spitfire, the 2000, the TR5, the TR6 as well as small independents like Bond and TVR

Old Audi A6 2.4 was the 'economy' version of their 2.8. Great body, great 5 valve engine. Find one with the ZF Tiptronic gearbox and you'll probably find a bargain.

Ford of Germany V6 came as 1.8,2.0,2,3,2.4,2.6,2.8,2.9.

BMW do still make an inline six of 1.6 litres - in their K 1600 motorcycle.

It's not for me (I prefer twins, hence my username), but has some fans.

Benelli & Honda have made inline-6 engines for motorcycles in the past (and Kawasaki?). Sukuzi did consider a V6 1 litre for their GSX-R, I think while superbike racing still used a limit of 750cc for 4 cylinder bikes (so the 1 litre bikes were generally road-use only).

I do like inline-6 car engines, especially in Triumph or BMW small capacity units. I'd prefer an inline-4 over a V6 for small capacity units. A 2-litre V6 based on Ford's current 1-litre 3 pot would be very interesting.

Do smaller V6 engine's loose torque the smaller they are scaled ?

Maybe this is why these are not made in smaller capacities

They don't loose torque but it tends to be higher up the rev range compared to a 4. With bigger engines this is not much of an issue.

Take 2 1.8 litre engines from the early 90's that were sold in the UK market in "sporty" cars, the Mazda MX3 and the Ford Fiesta RS1800.

Mazda 1.8 V6 130 PS @ 6500 and 115 lbs/ft @ 4500

Fords 1.8 DOHC Zetec 130 PS @ 6250 amd 120 lbs ft @ 4500

In reality absolutely sod all in it but the Mazda would be way more expensive to make.
