OK - so I'm vain! It's actually a J reg plate, but it'll spell my nick-name. It's also obviously a personal reg that it appears dateless - if you know what I mean.
I havn't actually received the paperwork from DVLA yet, as I only bought it yesterday, but it should arrive late next week. The dealer is going to send off the V5 and I'll be left with the green bit off the bottom.

"OK - so I'm vain!" - so what isn't everyone vain (about one thing or another)?
I'm told that buying the number from the DVLA produces the certificate almost next day. Transfering the number to your car is best done at one of the main offices while you wait. Our fleet manager used Stanmore I seem to recall but the web site will have the others.
Pick your time though, they get very busy.

Wally,
Assuming you mean that the dealer is going to send off the V5 to transfer it to you as the old number and that you haven't yet received the new number ownership slip then you can't just change the plates.
When you get the paperwork through for both car and number then you'll have to send the part of the new number form off to the local reg office together with V5 and MOT if applicable.
Only when the local reg office send back a confirmation letter that the transfer has been approved enclosing a new tax disc showing the new number (also the stamped/altered MOT if applicable) will you have the right to fit the new plates.
At that point you send them the old tax disc. The last step is the V5 showing the new number which will follow from Swansea after a while.
As a matter of interest we purchased a used car on 2/11/02, the old owner posted off the V5 with our details on 4/11/02. The V5 came back to us on 11/11/02 and we posted the number transfer request the same day. Just three days later on 14/11/02 we received the transfer confirmation with the new tax disc and the plates were fitted. On 20/11/02 we received the V5 back from Swansea with all the new details.
So only 10 days from sending off the V5 to get it in our name to being able to fit the plates and 16 days to getting the V5 back so, had we wished, we could have sold the car.
Excellent service, our local reg office have been this good for years.
Oh yes and good luck getting some new plates made up without some stupid, overlarge and meaningless postcode printed on them.

And make sure you put the same name (exactly) on your V5 as is on the certificate, otherwise they won't do the transfer.

Halfords make number plates up with the Halfords logo and their head office postcode physically stamped into the clear outer acrylic layer, rather than printed in black on the reflective backing... So from anything more than about 4ft away you can't tell there's a postcode there at all. :-)
Irritatingly you can only get plates now with the new, narrower, 50mm font. So I've got a front numberplate on my car with the old style 57mm font, which looks right, and a rear one with the new style 50mm font and a 2" gap at the start and end of the letters. All because the taxi plates we are given clip onto a bracket which fits under our rear number plate, and after about 6 months the number plate starts to crack around the screws.

Wally, I recently did this. After purchasing from the DVLA, the certificate came in a few days from which time you are free to change your number. I waited for my V5 to return because I didn't want to cause confusion and, having heard about 'problems' at DVLA, I wanted to play safe but I don't think this was absolutely necessary. Anyway, once you have both it is done instantly at your local DVLA office. If the car has an MOT they will endorse that and print you off a revised tax disc. It is all very simple but I did not realise that once you have done the documentation you have 24 hours to change the plates so get them made up first.
I got mine made up online by www.euronumberplates.co.uk who were efficient and do have a discreet manufacturer's label on the plate, so that they look neat. If you have any worries ring up the local office because they are very helpful. They are dealing with 'cherished' numbers all day.
