Big (bling) wheels - hillman

The HJ column in the Telegraph OnLine today has a section that advises a motorist on fitting smaller wheels to his car. Is this a hint that motorists are starting to become wise to marketing razz ?

F1 has been experimenting with big wheels and rubber band tyres. There's no hope.

Big (bling) wheels - Ed V

Big wheels are a "scam" designed primarily to provide aesthetic 'sporty' appeal at the expense of a decent ride. They are noisier, more expensive and the tyres cost more to buy/replace.

Almost no-one has such large (17/18 inches or more) wheels in Europe or the US. And the fastest BMWs of the 80s (e.g. a 325i) ran on 15 inch wheels.

I was once told (by a garage) that smaller wheels would affect my mileometer and speedometer!!

I had 17" wheels on my hire care Chevy Impala on hols. The sidewalls were HUGE though!

EdV, perhaps you should change your garage. If you changed to smaller wheels then that would indeed affect the mileometer and speedometer. But, the garage person can’t know that when you change the rims to a smaller diameter then you also change the tyre to one with the same outside radius as the original. Thus the rolling radius is the same and the effect on the mileometer and speedometer is negligible.

Grover, perhaps the Impala was designed for the larger diameter tyre and the ride was comfortable, as opposed to those hard riding bling ones.

Bling ( big ) wheels = sporty vehicle. The marketing dept have sold this on us for years.

Big wheels = scraped rims I reckon. I done some badly even when trying to be carefull. The nearside front is the one to watch .............

Indeed, although it hand the handling of a blancmange and was poorly damped.

300bhp in those circumstances can be "amusing"!

Our Juke has 17" wheels and the ride is pretty jiggly and in fact I would say too jiggly. The rental Juke we had, had 16" wheel and the ride was good. Friends have just bought a run out model of the pre-facelift Juke. 18" wheels!!!. The ride must be awful and the cost the tyres in a few years time will be out of proportion to the price of the car.
