BMW X5 E53 2001-SPORT 3.0I: - Tyre size: - redleg

Hi, Could youm please advise on tyre size for this model?

Just replaced rear tyre with spare after puncture this morning, i noticed that the spare is 255/50R19 Whilst the other rear is 275/45R19.

Before I change them to match, which is the size I should ideally have on this vehicle

as i guess i should not ideally be driving with different sized tyres

Many thanks Ian.

Go to one of the tyre online sellers websites - as an example, blackcircles.com - and enter your registration plate into the search engine. Only problem with that is that a lot of cars have a range of tyres they can be fitted with, so it might not help you out that much.

Have a look at the BACK of the wheel. It'll have numbers on it - something like 9J*19, or 19*9J. The 'J' number is the width of the wheel - which helps to define the range of widths of tyre that can be fitted to it.

Also, have a look at the drivers side door 'slam panel'. Usually a label on there with tyre sizes and pressure recommendations.

Finally, quite a few BMWs (and other makes) can have different tyre sizes on the front, compared to the back, so there may be nothing at all wrong. After all, you can only carry one spare, so if it has to go on the 'wrong' axle, then you just need to get the puncture fixed quickly so that you can go back to being properly set up.

Ideally, and legally. You are not allowed to use tyres with different size markings on the same axle. The exception is temporary use in an emergency.

The two tyres you mention are nominally 1.08% different in circumference - so whichever is the odd one could possibly (depending on wheel width) be seen as an acceptable substitute for the standard size; but not on one side only.

We have a Roomster here with 205/45R16 tyres. The spare is actually a full size wheel and tyre but is 195/55R16. It is <1% the same overall diameter, but is still counts as a temporary spare and has a 50mph / temporary use sticker on it.

205/45 16 are 591 diameter

195/55 16 is 621 diameter

That is 5% difference on diameter. No wonder its got a temporary sticker on it.

Well spotted. My mistake. The spare is 195/55R15, I mistyped, so about 0.8% difference at 596mm.

That's actually the standard size for other models in the range.
