Mercedes E240 Elegance - What Battery Type for Merc E240 - Nannoo1969

I have just bought a used Mercedes 2002 E240 Saloon and each day, the battery is completely flat. I took it to a garage who said there was a 1/2 amp drain on the battery but couldn't find the cause. I called an auto electrical engineer out who checked everything over then told me I needed to change the battery under the bonnet as the other one was fine in the boot. I went to Halfords and they told me I needed a motorcycle battery for the engine and the one in the boot was too small!! The one they recommend was twice the size of the one I have in there. What battery sizes/type should I have in both the boot and under the bonnet as I can't find anyone who can tell me. Merc want £75 just for booking it in before they even look at it!!!! Any advice would be very much appreciated!! Thanks

Well has the auto electrician fixed the drain, or will it cure itself with new battery(s)? just wondering.

Could you not cross refer battery types from those already in place, i ask because i'm not sure i'd be taking a fast fitters view as gospel?

Then telephone or pop into a MB specialist indy, who will probably have MB batteries in stock anyway, if not he will tell you exactly what you need and where to get them, he might charge you something to look under the bonnet, but unlike MB and their £75 before we get our backsides off the sofa you won't be required to be unpanted.

The battery in the engine bay is the back-up battery for the SBC braking system and does not start the car.The battery in the boot is the main power source for the car,and I would suggest an 017 size battery,which is the largest type that can be fitted to this car.Get the battery drain checked.One of the most common issues on these is the alarm siren which when it's self powered battery goes faulty ,can cause issues with main battery drain.hth

Thanks Mr Bennett but the auto electrician spent an hour and a half checking everything, couldn't pinpoint the drain with his STAR plug in diagnostic as the car had 45 fault messages. He disconnected both the front and rear batteries and most fault messages has cleared. He said he's 90% certain it was the front battery in the engine bay. He wants me to change this and if there's any further problems, he'll come back and have another go free of charge which was good of him. He said the battery in their wasn;t the correct one. Halfords don't have any records of Mercs having a battery in the engine compartment so were unable to help so am at a loss apart from going to Merc themselves which is about 45 miles away from where I live.

Have replaced both batteries today at huge cost from Mercedes so will keep you updated tomorrow if the car starts or if there's still a power drain. Thanks for all the help guys!

Thanks Peter but Ebay was the first place I looked and there's differing sizes and types for an E240 which is confusing.

May be an idea to contact MB .They have some good deals on batteries ,especially if buying 2,and of course you are going to get the correct types.I doubt if the star machine will pinpoint accurately a battery drain.
