Mondeo Mk3 Hatchback - Rear Bumper Reinforcer / Cross Member - MikeyH1

First post so apologies if this is a daft question...

We recently bought our well used & reliable mondeo as salvage from insurers; they did not think it worth repairing however we're reluctant to let it go so doing our best to put it back in working order. When we go it back from the garage the bumper had been removed and there was nothing bolted on to the metal of the car (if that makes sense), the bumper had been left in the boot but nothing else - what I am trying to understand is what sits between the bumper and the body of the car? Having trawled Google I think there is only a reinforcer / Cross member but wanted to double check before I start ordering parts.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Mike.

I've just had a look in the Haynes manual which isn't terribly helpful on the subject.

I think there's only the bumper and it's attached shock absorption pad. If you take the bumper off then I don't believe there's anything else there. There's just a big gap in the bodywork where the bumper fits in.

Sorry, that's not very helpful, is it!

Some have polystyrene packing between the bumper and body to reduce noise, but it usually gets left off.Otherwise it bolts right onto the irons.

Some have polystyrene packing between the bumper and body to reduce noise, but it usually gets left off.Otherwise it bolts right onto the irons.

The primary purpose of these blocks is not to reduce noise but to absorb energy in the event of an impact. The blocks are usually EPP (expanded polypropylene), not polystyrene. You'll find similar foam blocks inside doors and behind various trims, again to absorb energy in the event of a side impact or head impact internally.

If the car is supposed to have an EPP block behind the bumper, don't leave it out. Doing so reduces the crashworthiness of the vehicle and may result in preventable injury to occupants in a crash. They may also provide pedestrian protection (a big issue in crashworthiness at the moment - it's one of the drivers for side pivoting wipers to improve pedestrian head impact protection across the bottom of the screen area).

If it is similar to my Mk 7 Escort, there are 2 studs moulded into the rear face of the bumper.

These pick up with holes just below the rear light clusters in the boot with thin rubber pads between the bumper and the car with self locking nuts to retain the bumper.

As mentioned previously there is an impact absorbing coating on the inside fsce of the bumper.

The re are are also 3 retaining screws on each rear lower face of the rear wheel arch. These are difficult to remove due to them being in an ideal place to get showered by water thrown up by the wheels & mine rotted away so I made up brackets to replace them.

Its passed about 3 M.O.Ts since so they must have satisfied the testers

Thanks to everyone for their responses - have a feeling I am overcomplicating this - or just worrying about it a bit too much. Have found the bit I think is missing on ebay

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-FORD-MONDEO-MK3-REAR-BU...8?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&fits=Model%3AMondeo%7CPlat_Gen%3AMK+III&hash=item54090e5402

Think if I get this and stick this and the bumper back on the car job done?

Any more responses appreciated.
