VW evolution, zzzzz.

8th generation Passsat unveiled - oldtoffee

Yes bit like the last one that was a bit like the last one before that. Same as the Golf. Seems to work pretty well for them though so undoubtedly boring but also boringly successful.

Well, Trilogy, what would you expect?

The past few models have been such a dismal failure, selling in such small numbers that you're more likely to see a Morgan pick up truck on the road.

Think HP sauce, baked beans, Porsche, violins, wellingtons, mondeo, defender.....you hit upon something that works, then why speculate and change it?

Not my experience Ordovices, there's plenty around these here parts (East Anglia) Passats that is, not Morgan trucks.

"Volkswagen Passat goes up market to take on BMW and Mercedes"

Err.... what are Audis for then?

The interior is an improvement, a real step up from the current bland affair - looks more like the Skoda Superb dash

Another hate for the "flat-earthers" on here ;) , digital instrument binnacles.

I don' t see what is wrong with those abaci. They show the speed perfectly well and there is less to go wrong. What's next? VR pedals?

8th generation Passsat unveiled - Trilogy

Estate looks the best variant. Just hope the back seat folds correctly and hasn't gone the Mercedes penny pinching route.

Strange comment re Bmw and Mercedes. I suppose the A4 is due a replacement next year, new C class just launched, 3 series a couple of years old now so if you have to change soon it may be on the list.

Funnily enough, yes - that's how the auto boot is opened when your hands are full.

2011 model B7 didn't last long did it? and this doesn't sound like a B7.5 facelift.

Nice styling but not sure if it looks any nicer or more modern than the current one.

I see there will be a plug-in hybrid version. I wonder if there will be a pure electric e-Passat too.

It's a pity the best looking Passat ever made (the previous generation) breaks down every five minutes.

....breaks down every five minutes

Is that a statistic, or an attempt at being pithily witty?

It's no secret that VW's general reliability used to be so much better than it is currently

Still, they sell plenty of cars - so something must be working for them

Gullible public. Not sure I'll go back to VAG in a hurry.

I really loved my CC. It's only issue was water that sometimes ran into the boot when opened. The new passat's attempts to go upmarket will mean the CC being re-thought I would believe.

That's exactly how I feel about Mazda. It's a perspective thing. Our VWs haven't put a foot wrong, the 1.9 tdi and 1.2 petrol are both excellent on fuel, reliable and cheap to maintain. I suspect the Passat will need pads and discs all round next service, but 100,000 miles on the originals isn't bad, still get mid 50s mpg brim to brim and 30 mpg towing. Why wouldn't I get another?

8th generation Passsat unveiled - Ben 10

100,000 miles on first set of pads? I find that hard to believe. Do you do ANY braking?

8th generation Passsat unveiled - Ordovices

If they've been changed, I've never paid for them and I have all of the receipts, maybe a VW dealer had a charity week and did them for free.

I do around 3-400 miles per working week, motorway and dual carriage way (two commutes) and in the summer off to europe or the Black Isle towing around 1000-2000 mile round trip, it's an 08 model estate.

Yes I do brake, but I like to plan ahead whilst I'm driving and try to read the situations. I keep a wise distance between cars and don't fancy myself as a latter day "El Chueco"

Still on the original wiper blades, too, but they may have to go this time aswell.

My Merc E class estate is on the original discs and pads at 93,000. According to the service report at 90,000 they were "70% worn".

I'll most probably need to get them changed at the next service I suppose. Due at circa 105,000. It's good on tyres too. A set seems to last about 40,000 which given that they are chewing gum soft wide low things doesn't seem too bad.
8th generation Passsat unveiled - Ordovices

This could be embarassing Ben10, it may turn out that you have a leaden right foot :)

8th generation Passsat unveiled - Alby Back
I think it does depend on the driver and or the type of journeys a car is used for.

For example, my previous car was a Qashqai and I got it with 14,000 miles already on it. By the time it had got to 25,000 miles it needed new front discs and pads. I kept it until it had done 80,000 miles and it never needed them changing again while I had it.

I can only assume that it's previous owner had more of a fondness for the brake pedal or indeed that their journeys required more use of it than my typical ones do.
8th generation Passsat unveiled - Happy Blue!

Yup - not much need for heavy braking if you typical trip is 200 miles on the motorway.

No petrols?

The private buyer doesn't get much choice even though supposedly only 2% sold in the UK are petrols.

I rather like the new VWs' look - Polo, Golf and now Passat.

The designs are nicely clean yet modern looking.

Some responses here read like a poor journalist's report, wordy and short on facts.

Meanwhile VW just keeps counting its sales.
