This has been reported in the US media for several months now.

Apparently GM have been using the excuse that, because the company filed for bankruptcy, the 'new' GM are not liable for the deaths linked to this fault.

They've known about this for years and years. I find it utterly astonishing that the UK media has not picked this story up in the same way they did with Toyota; relative to the shabby way GM have behaved, Toyota were a paragon of honesty and openness.
