I expect they like it as it's fun

Because proper engines, that don't sound like the typical rattly sewing machine (or 4 pot Diesels that should really be in a tractor) motors as fitted to millions of automotive washing machines, are wondrous things.

Real engines make the blood flow, a V8 howling down the road brings out the small boy in grown men again, and nothing wrong with that.

Many hours of my formative years were spent in the signal box and on the platform at Welwyn North station, at a time when the Deltics with their massive 2 stroke supercharged Diesels would thunder out of the tunnel and through the station at 80+mph, stirring stuff for a young lad, the pleasure of that sound and power once learned never leaves you...i suspect the same is even more so for Americans brought up to the delicious sounds of V8's from when they could first hear.

I thought it was going to be a link to a picture of a hamburger ;-)

The Roadkill series of videos are an excellent watch - all about tinkering with old cars, from unloved 70s 'land yachts' to some very tasty customised machinery. They're fun and funny without the dubious blokiness which has blighted Top Gear for the past several years.

@GordonBennett - a Deltic on full song is one of THE most glorious sounds.

I can remember the Commer two-stroke diesels carrying loads of bricks round Bedfordshire-heard them for miles.

This 4-cylinder diesel sounds pretty good... www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4bkDjU6jKk ....Detroit Diesel 4-cylinder supercharged 2-stroke

I heard a sound where i work a couple of weeks ago that i haven't heard live for a generation, a Jacob Brake doing its thing in a real British lorry, wonderful it was for that fleeting moment.

Ah the sound, the Rootes Group 3cylinder horizontally opposed 2 stroke diesel with a Roots blower. Great design it it's day but not good to work on when installed beneath the cab (no tilt cabs in those days). The sound was only bettered by the V8 cummins, in commercial engines.

In the 1950s Foden 2-stroke diesels also had a very distinctive sound, Roots blowers and maybe turbocharged later too.
