Audi A1 122PS CAXA engine - 97 or 99 RON petrol - Grease_monkey
Would I get any benefit whatsoever using higher RON petrol in my car??

Just a random thought that I would like answering.

I have started using v power or bp ultimate as per hj's advice. I am genuinely seeing about 5mpg more (brim to brim calculation) and the car drives better. The local Indy I use reckons he gets a lot of work from cars solely using supermarket fuel. His take is that it dies not contain enough lubricity to keep the engine sweet.

I'm sticking with the higher rated fuel purely as I reckon the increased cost is almost offset against the increased mpg.

I was always under the impression that higher RON fuels were better for turbocharged engines? What car have you got Chris79?

I also use 'premium' fuels - in my case, usually the Shell diesel.

My reasoning :

1. Servicing, fuel costs, tyres, etc on 'normal' fuel are roughly £3k a year. Premium diesel is an extra £150 a year.

2. I own my car outright. Not lease, not PCP. Depreciation is probably another £3-4k a year.

3. So that's £6-7k a year, £150 a year for the (maybe) better quality fuel that helps my engine live longer ... well, if I'm that bothered about £150, then I should have bought a cheaper car.

I was using Shell V Power Nitro+ in my 1.4 litre Chevrolet Kalos 16V, but I've switched back to normal 95 RON. It's not because I don't believe the better fuel actually is better, but after about six months I really don't think it's made any difference to performance or economy.

My car seems to suffer from a sticky valve problem. About a minute after a cold start it will misfire for a few minutes after which it runs fine again. Sometimes fault code P0300 'random multiple misfire' is generated. If I give it a good Italian tune up it will be fault free for a couple of weeks until it gradually reappears. I have found that using the better fuel does seem to make the problem more severe, and that's why I switched back to normal unleaded. If anyone knows of a simple cure I would be grateful. I don't really want to get involved with removing the cylinder head and replacing the valves. I'd rather move the car on than do that.

Last year I bought a Seat Leon 1.4 TSi 140PS, its the exact same engine used by Audi in the A1 but with more power. Seat state in the handbook that the fuel used should be 95 octane min and must comply with BS EN 228. All petrol sold in the UK meets those standards thus I use the cheapest I can buy which is either Asda or Tesco. Been using supermarket fule pretty much exclusively since the mid 80's, never had a problem and when I have been forced to use "branded" fuel I have never noticed the car running better or doing more mpg.

The wifes car is a Diesel Kia Ceed. Since buying it she has filled it almost exclusively with Asda of tesco diesel. On pretty much every fill up the dash display has said about 52 mpg (its accurate when you do a brim to brim check), the exceptions have been when we have been on holiday (seen as much as 58 mpg over 2 weeks) and on one fill up when the weather was below freezing, the roads snow covered and the traffic at a crawl or standstill, it displayed 41 mpg.

The other week she filled with Shell since she was not going shopping and needed fuel to visit her mother, the saving on fuel at Tesco etc would have been pretty much wiped out by travelling 16 miles. At the end of that fill up (during which she had used the car prfectly normally) the display showed 39 mpg, by far the worst it has displayed in 4 years. The car was then filled at Tesco and guess what, it is currently showing 54 mpg.

Will she be buying Shell again, cannot see it personally.

I've been filling my car up mostly at the nearest murco garage and putting Millers petrol ecomax in with the fuel, I'm coming to the end of the bottle of millers. This got me thinking would I best filling my car up with super unleaded fuel instead of buying another bottle of millers and adding this to regular petrol?

I run two turbo diesels a 140 hp 2.0 tdi in an audi q3 and a 1.3 cdti in a corsa d. As an aside I had a a3 1.4 t petrol 122hp. It was a lovely engine to drive, probably one of the best I gave driven. I am giving serious consideration to changing from a diesel q3 to a 1.4t 140 when the time comes to change.
