And me, one new piston and seeing as the car had covered high miles i chucked new rings on the others, ran sweet for years.

If a piston is damaged its highly likely the bore is damaged. The engine need a full strip. It will probably require a rebore and that means all 4 cylinders and 4 new psitons. Add in bearings gaskets and labour and you will have a huge bill.

Better idea is to fit a good engine from a write off.

The car is with Vauxhall and I suspect they caused the damage trying to remove a stuck injector. The bore looked ok when I insisted looking at what they were doing but the head was not there. They only want to change the damaged parts and I think it will cause problems in the future.

Is this a warranty job being done by a Vauxhall main dealer? Why were they trying to remove the stuck injector?

It may be that the cylinder walls are completely unmarked, and only the piston crown and / or head are damaged, in which case they can be replaced and all should be well.

But I find it hard to imagine that the piston's been damaged when the engine hasn't been running. I would be very, VERY suspicious about this. I can't help but think they're trying to do a quick, cheap patch-up job that may lead to problems a couple of months down the line, which of course would be completely unrelated to the work done.

This is extreme case scenario 99% of problems with this engine are cured by fitting a new piston and new rings on all pistons I have yet to see one with bore damage but there is always a first time.Either way you will not know till the head is removed.

I think the damage was caused by a piece of the injector there are lots of marks on the piston where something has been squashed against it.
