Volkswagen Touran - vw touran 1.9 vs ford focus cmax 2.0 - samuelodog

Which is better (more reliable basically) - looking at buying used c.£5000, so c. 60,000 miles.

Diesel.

Some places say the 1.9 vw TDi is no good. Any opinions? Heard good things about 2.0 tdci

Most people would say the other way round: it was the VW Group 2.0 PD diesel which gave the problems. The post-2008 common-rail 2.0 diesel has a better reputation, as does the 1.9.

The C-Max 2.0 TDCI seems OK, but there have been problems with the 1.6.

2.0 TDCi is used in many cars including Ford, Peugeot, Citroen and Volvo.

As far as I know, there are no reports of recurring failures of similar components which would indicate a reason to avoid. My S-Max has the 2.0 TDCi mated to an autobox and does about 10,000 miles pa in a mix of driving. In almost four years I have had no mechanical failures (and that incudes the electric handbrake!)

I know to avoid the 1.6 tdci.

Prob with the 1.9 tdi - I can't afford a post 2008, so would be stuck with the dodgy engines.

So you think 2.0 tdci is better than 1.9 tdi pre-2008 (prob looking at 2004-6)?

Just strange as VW have a good rep. compared to Ford.

Thanks

Again, many people would say it was the other way around.

You need to decide what model you like, whatever manufacturer, read up on weak points, go for a test drive, then make a decision based on that.

You can ask people what they think of a particular model, but when it comes down to comfort and the driving characteristics, only a long test drive is the answer as everyone is different.

No - the VW Group 1.9s have always been OK as far as I know. The problem was with some examples of the pre-2008 2.0 PD diesel engines.

Go for a VW Group 1.9 or a Ford 2.0 and you should be fine - with the usual caveats about finding one with a full service history.
