Mondeo 1.8 TDCI 2009 - Diesel Knock & Judder - John9752

Hi,

I'm new to this website and quite new to Ford Mondeo's. I bought the car 7 months ago and has now done 75,000 miles.

When I start the car it usually takes 2 attempts when cold weather and with some white smoke. The car then runs fine and is generally quite quiet until it starts to warm up. The diesel knocking then starts and gives a little judder when setting off from a standstill but worse in warm weather, although the judder stops when the car is up to temperature the knocking on acceleration continues.

I have had the fuel filter changed and a new fuel pressure regulator fitted but is still the same, acceleration is very good and fuel consumption is also good, I have found the car runs a little better on a better grade of fuel.

Does anyone have any ideas of what the problem can be?

Ideally you need to get the fault codes read but off the top on my head if its a diesel type knock I would say its an injector problem. Usually happens when neat unvapourised diesel is getting in.

Thanks for the feedback. If it is an injector problem would it show up on the fault codes?

You can have leaking injectors and the car running really quite well without generating fault codes, but get the injectors re-seated and then you find the car is running so much more smoothly. Is there any sign of fuel dribbling down the side of the engine? In my experience of running a diesel, the problems you report are more than likely to be caused by the injectors - either leaking or mucky. If there is no sign of them leaking, try changing the fuel filter and fill the new filter with a good injector cleaner before reconnecting the fuel pipes and starting the engine.

Don't try to get injectors done on the cheap! I was boasting in a discussion only a few months ago that I had found a local garage who would do my injectors for just £120. Well, he put a deep screwdriver cut in one of the injector seats by trying to beat out a stuck copper seat 'cos he didn't have the right tools. It's now cost me a further £360 at the diesel specialist, who warn my that the screwdriver cut is too deep to re-cut completely and that they've done the best they can, but it'll blow again.

The car had a new injector delivery pipe fitted in Oct 2012, I don't know if anything was done to the injectors but can't see any of them leaking. I had the fuel filter changed about 3 months ago but no improvement, maybe I could try a injector cleaner in the fuel tank? can you recommend a good cleaner? Also, you are not to far from where I live in Bacup, can you recomend a good diesel specialist that would be cheaper than a ford garage?
