It's needs further checks, causes could be

Cheap air flow meter
Air leak
EGR valve fault
Partially blocked exhaust
Wiring issue
Corroded wiring
Cambelt timing

Just to name a few. All the AFM is doing is monitoring how much air the engine is drawing in and the ECU calculates the fuel required. The reason a fault flags up is when the monitored air flow is outside of the ECU expected calculations known as parameters

You have made the classic mistake of assuming that a faulty mass air flow sensor is the cause of a reported fault of low air flow. Indeed the sensor could be the problem, but so could many other things mentioned above that would cause a loss of air flow. The ECM cannot tell the difference, and that's why thus fault code is generated.

Thanks for reporting back on what the real fault was -- it is really useful to know the actual causes, and how they were fixed, as this is what really helps other people.

Absolutely. A customer of mine was told his car needed a new MAF at £140 plus fitting plus VAT. To add insult to injury they charged the full hour labour rate when its a ten minute job.

It turned out to be a broken air filter box at the back of the engine letting in too much air.

A self tapper in each corner and all was well again.
