Time to renew breakdown cover - balleballe

Currently with the AA but notice a lot of cheaper seemingly good providers such as 'start rescue', 'QDOS', 'Driverguardian'

The only reason i'm thinking of sticking to the AA is because of their 'breakdown repair cover'

My car broke doen 2 months ago and an ignition coil was replaced free as I was on that policy. Nobody else seems to offer that sort of thing.

For those interested in the breakdown repair cover, the things covered and excuded are here:

Should I stick to the AA or cn anyone recommend me a cheaper alternative just as good?

We have Aviva rescue. Cost £51 this year for full cover excluding European travel (we don't drive abroad). That covers all our 3 cars and me and the whatever car we are driver or passenger in. They use the RAC, when you ring the RAC answer and attend. Best value by far.

Do you have to be insured with Aviva to take this ? It seems excellent.

No, but you do get a discount when you have multiple policies.

Always give details of the newest car first when you call, that is the one they rate the premium on, doesn't matter how old the other are. If your cars are the same age give then details of the one with the smaller engine, that makes a difference as well.

At renewal our policy was £67 based on a 60 plate 1.6 CRDi Ceed. Changed that to being based on a 13 plate 1.4 Seat Leon TSI, premium drops to £51.

Thank you - that's very helpful. Currently with Saga and RAC. Renewal not due until August but noted this in my diary. This year moved from two cars to one ( no longer working part time and not needed ) Your policy surely isn't comprehensive, is it ?

since leaving the AA after a ridiculous renewal price,

I have been impressed with the price and service from autonational rescue.

Used AUTONATIONAL for about 6 years, covered 3 cars and thank goodness only needed service twice but service was excellent. Contact with admin. very helpful and all round good value. Only changed to AA this year because of special offer linked to Home Insurance.

Yep, always worth checking prices annually.

I've not long found this out, but on the Mercedes' we own as long as we continue to get them serviced in line with manufacturers instructions at a Mercedes dealership we get breakdown cover for the following 12 months after each service.

It does at least offer a crumb of comfort for paying the higher servicing costs (although on my wife's new B Class we got 3 years servicing thrown in free of charge).

Haven't had to use them yet, so i reserve judgment, have renewed with Autoaid again this year, £39 a year, covers us both but i believe you have to be policyholder and spouse for a second name on the policy.

Different to the others in that you pay the recovery agent and then claim the cost back from Autoaid, feedback on various forums is good, i suppose in practice paying up front would encourage people to mitigate the cost of the breakdown somewhat.

I was with Autohome (Northampton) for many years but renewal of near on £110 with only a fractional NCD, too much.

As I said it covers everything except continental travel.

At home, recovery, onward travel, etc. Its as comprehensive as its gets. Last year when a spring broke on my BMW the RAC were with me within 45 minutes during Friday rush hour and took the car styrait to our local BMW indy. Expected a raise in my premium this year because of this call out but it stayed the same until I changed the named car, then it dropped.

I don't pay for car breakdown .... Nissan throw it in for free for 12 months after annual service at my local franchise dealer

Nissan Assist, full European cover including home start relay etc.

Apologies Skidpan. I really must read more carefully.

Thats fine if you own a Nissan but sod all use if you don't. Been looking at new cars recently, Nissan Note and Seat Ibiza. Both offer to extend the recovery free when you have the annual service carried out but in Seats case you have to make the booking on-line, sod all use if you don't have the internet.

But such a deal is no good to us since we need cover for our 2nd car. Family/multi car policies are little more expensive than individual cover thus we would make only a small saving.

When I returned to the UK after 14 years abroad I rejoined the RAC. After a few more years the RAC got confused with the subscription cost and undercharged me one year. I questioned it by letter and they assured me that their renewal fee was correct. Then, months later, I received a very direct letter demanding the shortfall. I wrote to them pointing out that they had assured me that I didn't owe them anything. Then I received a letter threatening me with the bailiffs if I didn't pay up. I went through the house collecting all the old RAC 'memorabilia' that I had from them over the previous 30 years, including the key to the roadside assistance shelters and badges, and mailed it in a package to them together with a cheque for £40.00.

Then I joined the AA. When I transferred my bank account from RBS to the COOP I found that the current account, for a small monthly fee, entitled me to the same service that I'd never used from the AA, but at a fraction of the cost. So I resigned from the AA. At first the service was provided by Green Flag, but then it was changed to the RAC. I wonder if the RAC keeps records, Hmm !

I have used breakdown cover exactly once in the last ten years... total cost for that cover £750.

This year I have switched to PAYG cover ... £50/callout, £3 to sign up. Assuming my cars achieve the same level of reliability in the next ten years as the previous ten I will save £700.
