Renault Espace - turbo whine - jetskimason

2.2dci. Oil blockage. Got it in time. New oil filter going a dream but now there's a huge turbo whine. Any suggestions. No power problems and turbo boosting grand but very loud deep whine

If the sound is coming from the turbo then it is probably the bearings that have suffered .

The 2.2dCi engine is good but must be looked after, as you have found out, with 9kmls/1year oil changes using 5w/40 fully synthetic diesel oil. Seems that you have not "got away with it" as you had hoped and you now must replace the turbo very soon to avoid further problems.

Thanks Fernando. Wasn't trying to get away with it. Merely unaware that the clog had happened. No signs just impact within 2 minutes of starting car. Luckily my mechanic lives 100 yards away in the direction I was travelling so freewheeled to his house. But think damage has been done to the turbo.

Can you replace bearings in turbo or is it a new turbo job you think.

I'm fairly sure you can have the turbo stripped and reconditioned with new seals and bearings - the turbo unit itself is fairly common

You can swop your turbo for a reconditioned one.

You need to carefully consider which reconditioned turbo to go for. I believe that a Garratt "own" reconditioned turbo (as good as new) is the one to put on your shopping list, as you may find that cheaper / lesser quality reconditioned turbos have a short life.

Fit a turbocharger core cartridge- not worth messing about with bearings and seals at these prices.
