Citroen Berlingo Multispace - Replacing inner door membrane - mss1tw

I've looked online, but I know there's a wealth of knowledge here, so I thought it worth posting to ask:

Is it possible to make a replacement inner door membrane from sheet rubber or plastic?

I have seen them and they just look like a cheap bit of foam glued in place.

It seems I would just have to use an old one as a template and glue/silicone it back in place.

Thoughts/ideas appreciated!

Years ago they were polythene. Now they are made from a 2-3mm thick closed cell foam. The foam is chosen for being water proof and having some sound insulation properties to reduce road and wind "hiss". It certainly isn't just any old cheap rubbish (at least not on the cars built in the Midlands for many years, though I can't speak for Citroen).

Try thick polythene.

Sure you can't repair it with some duck tape? At least stick it back on over the polythene to retain the sound absorption.

I'd use some Geocell, The Works (check out Toolstation), or cheap silcon sealer if you're tight.

Thanks cyd

One side has indeed been repaired with duck tape where I had to slit it to replace the mirror, and I have bought some Silent Coat Sound Deadening to go inside the doors which will mean taking the whole thing off.

Of course I'll endeavour to take them both off in one whole non-damaged piece but my track record with this sort of thing is not good. Give me spanner or sparks any day!

Have you priced a new part from dealer.?Might not be too expensive and it will be a correct fit first time.

I have to admit no, I just assumed £££ as it's an obscure non-service part

Berlingo multispace and the Peugeot equivalent the Partner Tepee have the lowest dealer part prices around.

Well worth a check.

Will do - thank you!

I have made these in the past from the thick black polythene sheet that builders use under concrete called dpc membrane stuck in place with that sticky black rubber tape that is sold in glazing shops for bedding and sealing double-glazed units in wooden frames.

I used a small seam roller from B&Q to make sure that the Silent Coat is stuck to the door properly with no air pockets, otherwise it's not as effective as it should be.

Otherwise it is good stuff. Remember you don't have to cover the whole door skin - just enough to stop the panel thrumming. Try rapping it with your knuckles to find out where the worst parts are.

I put a small piece on the inside of the door card followed by some thin closed cell foam.

There are no buzzes from the door even when I turn the (uprated) speakers up. Very pleased with the results.

Great tips thanks Corax, there's not much by way of instructions included and yours make perfect sense.

Perfect day for fitting the sound-deadening mats.

Does anyone know a good way of removing the glue residue for the membrane?

So far I have tried:

WD40
Citrus degreaser
Petrol
Acetone
Methyl ethyl ketone
Silicone sealabt remover

The stuff seems to be impervious to all those and just moves around without coming off.
