Toyota Prius - Does a hybrid require specialist mechanic? - ab132
I am considering buying a Prius and am reassured by its reliability including past 100k. However I am still concerned to know whether, in the unlikely event that something does go wrong, will I be forced to take it to a main dealer or Toyota specialist, or is it likely that most independents have now got sufficiently up to speed to do the job?

I'd be quite happy doing routine maintenance meself, oils coolants filters etc, i'd read up on things like brakes and see if they are a standard item, if so i'd happily sort the brakes out meself too (proper parking brake no electric rubbish here), but anything more than that i'd only use the Toyota dealer, as much for my own personal safety where such currents and voltages are present, thats all only my opinion mind.

Luckily Toyota servicing is very reasonably priced, so finding the right preferably family owned and ruralish dealer would be my quest.

As suggested above, the basic mechanical parts can be handled by most mechanics. However the hybrid drive does require special training and appropriate tools which very few independents will have.

+1

Mechanical work on them is the same as any other car such as servicing, suspension/steering etc. There is special training required for any work on the hybrid system and a certificate is required to allow this (much like the f gas certificate needed to work on A/C systems).

I gained my hybrid licence for both Toyotas and VWs in the respective dealerships, but there are other independent bodies that can train mechanics for hybrids and as such, a good indie will usually be able to work on them if they take training seriously enough to take part in the scheme.

My local, much-trusted indie's son (who is in fact half of the outfit) is running his own Prius, with the stated aim of familiarising himself with the whole set-up. The last time we spoke, he said he had been addressing the issue of the hybrid battery failure. He said he had dismantled the battery into its individual cells and the usual problem when the battery fails is that one cell has gone, not all of them.

I was impressed. This suggests some independents are indeed up to speed with the technology.

I'm interested in seeing how this plays out over the next year or two. I quite fancy a hybrid for my next car and its basically a choice between a Prius and a Insight on my budget. However as the toyota garages I've dealt with couldn't diagnose a flat tyre I always held back as I'd want an independent to service/maintain it.

Considering the 'laptop says no' attitiude of some main dealer mechanics there must be some pretty skilled and sharp independent mechanics who would find this area profitable.
