ford mondeo mk 3 2000 automatic - gearbox problem - terryhh

I cannot use the "D" position to start or at low speed as it will not engage low gears, only high revs.I can use the "1" and "2" positions and then move into "D" and then move down again when slowing or stopping.Reverse gear is fine.

I have been told that it is maybe a forward clutch problem in the gearbox, which would need to be removed/repaired and would be very expensive and may not be cost effective.Any other thoughts on what the problem may be,and could I continue to drive as above without causing and further problems ?

There is very little you can do to an auto box on a DIY basis which is one of the reasons I wouldn't have one. I would suggest you take it to a specialist or phone them with the symptoms, they should be able to give you some idea of the cost.

Has the transmission fluid been changed? It's the first step on any older autobox that's giving problems as dirty, contaminated or worn ATF can cause many problems so changing it may cure the issue - if it doesn't cure the fault(s) you've eliminated the ATF as an issue - but on a 14-year old Mondeo it may cost more than the car's is worth to go further.
