Sounds like diesel knock, difficult to diagnose without actually hearing it. Could be a faulty injector although DI engines tend to make that noise anyway but usually louder when cold.

It could of course be much worse it could be the first signs of big end failure .

You don't list the cars mileage, or its service history.
IS the car running well apart from the noise?
Try a good independent garage? Or ask VX how much they will charge for an inspection?

It may be a simple exhaust leak.. check all unions and the various boxes for leaks - and the exhaust manifold gasket.

First thing to do is change the engine oil and filter and then see what it sounds like, and don't put mazola in.;) missing services is the fast route to serious expense.

warning long tale alert, but with a moral to the story.

Many years ago i bought a used Diesel Landcruiser with about 40k miles on it, always did me own servicing, first thing i did was to give it a full service, so alls well, new oil in of a very well known make of the right Diesel spec..not quite so much a household name then, now on every accessory shop shelf.

Anyway alls well, then after only 1000 miles i noticed the engine rumbling, and i mean really expensive sounding rumbling..sounded terminal..i'd bought a pup.

I took it to the local Toyota dealer and the worse fears confirmed, they listened to it and pronounced a full engine rebuild needed, mains/big ends rumbling, i'd concluded the same.

Then i remembered the now gone small Toyota dealer at Collyweston, the mechanic there used to build and rally Landcruisers, so i rumbled over there, sure enough he came out and gave the engine a good rev, and asked me about it.

He told me in (scathing) short syllables to drain the **** contents of the sump and put some real oil in, which i did and instant smooth as a baby's bum running, that vehicle went on for many years trouble free and eventually when my Mrs wrote it off (another tale for another day), the bloke who bought the salvage somehow got hold of my number and rang me up to say he had never heard an engine sound so sweet, was way over 100k by then.

Moral of story, Diesel engines especially need very regular servicing with good quality oils, and i've never used that oil again.

Nothing at wrong with Vauxhalls own fully synthetic oil, which if you chat nicely to the parts bloke is very cheap too, especially if you don't mind buying a pack of 4 x 5 litre cans.

I have used Millers/Fuchs for many years, my MB indy uses Fuchs (formerly Silolene), there's Valvoline Mobil Castrol Shell and a host more companies that have been trading for donkeys years, all good, getting the right oil spec is the thing...keep your eyes open and buying when the price is right is obviously best for your wallet.

Opie oils site is well worth looking at, you can buy there of course, they have clearance and promotions, or just peruse and shop elsewhere.

I would buy the cheapest oil you can find that meets the specification demanded by GM exactly. I guess that would be a fully synthetic diesel engine oil - I don't think there are any bad oils anymore (except maybe some old 20w/50 mineral oils) as the specifications are now so stringent

I would steer clear of Halfords, Castrol etc. and go for a better value oil such as Tetrosyl sold via Motor Factors. That's what my Golf diesel gets and it's done nearly 200k miles without any problems and it's an engine renowned for camshaft problems.
