First thing to do is change the engine oil and filter and then see what it sounds like, and don't put mazola in.;) missing services is the fast route to serious expense.
warning long tale alert, but with a moral to the story.
Many years ago i bought a used Diesel Landcruiser with about 40k miles on it, always did me own servicing, first thing i did was to give it a full service, so alls well, new oil in of a very well known make of the right Diesel spec..not quite so much a household name then, now on every accessory shop shelf.
Anyway alls well, then after only 1000 miles i noticed the engine rumbling, and i mean really expensive sounding rumbling..sounded terminal..i'd bought a pup.
I took it to the local Toyota dealer and the worse fears confirmed, they listened to it and pronounced a full engine rebuild needed, mains/big ends rumbling, i'd concluded the same.
Then i remembered the now gone small Toyota dealer at Collyweston, the mechanic there used to build and rally Landcruisers, so i rumbled over there, sure enough he came out and gave the engine a good rev, and asked me about it.
He told me in (scathing) short syllables to drain the **** contents of the sump and put some real oil in, which i did and instant smooth as a baby's bum running, that vehicle went on for many years trouble free and eventually when my Mrs wrote it off (another tale for another day), the bloke who bought the salvage somehow got hold of my number and rang me up to say he had never heard an engine sound so sweet, was way over 100k by then.
Moral of story, Diesel engines especially need very regular servicing with good quality oils, and i've never used that oil again.
