Yes, this is BMW's rather belated answer to the Mercedes B-class (and the previous A-class before M-B shot itself in the foot with the new model).
The Qashqai has sold very well despite Nissan not being a particularly sought-after badge, and I can see BMW selling a lot of these. I can see my next car in 2-3 years not needing to be as big as the Octavia - an Audi A3 is tempting - but if this can provide more versatility than the A3 and an equally good driving experience, it'll be on quite a lot of people's shortlists - not least those of us who (rightly or wrongly) prefer FWD.
Edit - just looked at the pictures (thank you, Trilogy) and I think I see an echo (in the side view) of the underrated Honda FRV. The 225i should be good fun, although the basic 1.5 three-cylinder which powers the new Mini has been well reviewed. And 4WD is an option too,
It'll be interesting to see if BMW have managed to retain their traditional virtues in the new model. The Mini does retain most of those virtues, so we can be hopeful.
