New VW Passat / Jetta - maximusimo
Hi after a bit of info/advice.

The wife is currently driving a 2004 (MK V I think) 1.9 tdi and for more space is thinking of moving to either a Passat or Jetta. Not looking one with loads of miles and probably between 2007 & 2010 as anything later would prob be too expensive.

Just wondering if anyone can give advice on what we should be watching out for when looking at cars and maybe pros and cons and if low mileage even makes much of a difference - I actually bought my 2000 passat with 121k on it and have just past 222k.

Size wise is there much of a difference between the two?

Thanks in advance for any advice that can be given, much appreciated.

A Jetta is a Golf with a boot so considerable smaller than a Passat.

Avoid the previous gen Passat like the plague, unreliable piece of junk.

Cheers Steve, what years would that include and is it all engine sizes?

For the same money you'll get a newer, mechanically identical, Skoda Octavia.

The Jetta is less popular than the Golf in the UK market and so offers better value second hand. In other markets (like Australia) small saloons/sedans are seen as premium - go figure. I've seen reviews of both the Jetta and the Golf Estate/Wagon which shares its underpinnings implying they're somehow more cheaply built than the Golf.

Anyway, they're popular in Australia, in the UK friend of mine is on his 3rd or 4th Jetta as a cheap (to lease) company car which is refined and I think they've been pretty reliable (1.9PDs and 2.0CRs, all manuals).

A nice Jetta 2.0TSi might be subtle way into a Golf GTi on lower insurance ?

I think you will find that the Passat will be the cheapest of the VW's.

Make sure you get the CR engine & not the 2l PD. CR engines were fitted from around mid 2008 onwards. The engine code will start with a C, ie CBAB is the 140BHP version.

From my expereince the CR engines are more modern and smother but not as relibale and robust as the older PD engines. My 2001 Audi A4 1.9 100 BHP is 242k and still running sweet.......trick is to service regularly oil changes every 8k using 504/507 oil.
