The press have been suggesting that covert speed cameras are to be introduced on motorways to enforce the 70 mph limit. This seems an easy way for our cash strapped Government to make even more cash out of motorists. The effects I imagine once everyone knew about such cameras would be a procession of cars, vans, motorbikes etc moving like an army of ants. Anyone have any reliable knowledge of this?

Unlike Income Tax, Fuel Duty and VAT this "tax" can be very easily avoided - by sticking to speed limits, or at least not exceeding them by more than 10%.

Given that most motorways are full of trucks doing 56mph, I don't see how enforcing the 70 limit will have any effect on congestion.

there is a very simple way round this - don't break the limit and then you don't have to pay.

Also if you have ever seen an army of ants you will know they get about pretty quickly in all flowing along nicely. Are you saying you don't want to get about quickly and flow along nicely?

There are new gantrys all over the UK motorway network that have cameras in built but not switched on along with the provision for toll readers.

The fine would presumably be the usual £100 (and three points). Lets say for guesswork that half of that is swallowed by admin, maintenance of the cameras etc.

Now let's assume these cameras are set to usual 10%+1mph threshold, allowing for speedo under read you're going to be at an indicated 80+ to trigger them.

Two million fines ayear at a net return of £100m? A drop in the ocean of highways spending let alone overall tax take,

More worrying - should be the plans to introduce permanent 60 mph limits on motorways in/near industrial areas to limit air pollution - which is crass when the pollution comes from industry, not road vehicles.

See the plans for the M1 near Sheffield - soon to appear in an area near you!

I saw this story, the Highways Agency - the official department responsible for roads - said they were not speed cameras.

Yet the media side with other "experts" with no facts, just opinion to suit their biased agenda.

But no doubt "stealth cameras to enforce 70mph limit" sells more papers than "traffic monitoring cameras to be installed to reduce jams and control traffic".

driving home through South Wales, saw the signs warning of speed cameras - but only saw these black drums, facing the road, about a foot wide, with a single laser-like green light on them. Are they speed cameras? Am I paranoid?
