I was leaving a car park, going round a bend and changed from 1st to 2nd and the gear stick went 'floppy', the only gear I could put it in was R.

Recovery picked it up, gave it the once over and looked under the bonnet and said: 'its most likely the gear linkage' he was able to put it into 1st by connecting under the bonnet.

Today - I had my mechanic come and look at it. He flatly said 'It is not the linkages because I am able to change gear under the bonnet', contact fiat to see what it is'

Now I am without a clue... Is it the linkages and he just cba?

Or is it something like the lever arm or the gear bushes? How can one tell?

It's a 2008 Grande Punto, 1.3 Diesel. OV58HTK.
