At 50 mpg that is over £12000 a year in fuel. Add in a new car every couple of years and maintenance the total cost must be staggering, more than many people earn.
Would I stay over in a B & B, well no, I would buy a small basic house and live in it during the week. The mortgage would be less than the commuting expenses plus you would have a house to sell at the end of it, hopefully at a profit.
Having said that when my employer closed the office I worked in I was given 3 choices, redundancy, move house (they would provide moving expenses and top up the mortgage on a like for like property) or travel the 36 miles each way at 13 pence a mile.
I took the 13 pence a mile. Moving would have mean't the wife finding a new job (or commuting with no expenses) plus she had a pretty well paid job she liked. The trip was nearly all motorway and was easily covered in 45 minutes even at peak (not really busy) times, my old commute was about 8 miles across town and took 30 minutes so not much difference time wise. 4* at the time was under £2 a gallon thus after paying for the fuel there was still plenty left over to pay for some extra servicing and extra depreciation.
After 5 years they closed the office and moved back to the area where I lived, daily commute dropped to 12 miles each way but I lost the expenses. After another year they finally closed completely.
Still live in the same house.
