Is this the beginning of a sea change from VW (with others to follow)?

[ ...the Polo BlueMotion is changing from diesel power to petrol. The 1.2 TDI has been dropped in favour of a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder TSI engine with 90PS. This averages a claimed 68.9mpg with CO2 of 94g/km.]

VW are not the first company to offer a 1.0 3 cylinder turbo petrol and promise great fuel returns, Ford have the Fiesta/Focus on offer and lets not forget the Fiat Twin air engines. Renault/Nissan/Dacia also have a small turbo petrol and I am sure I have missed many others.

Problem is the Ford and Fiat have been widely acknowledged as being pretty rubbish on fuel coming nowhere near the EU figures in most cases. Now I know (as should all car buyers) that the EU figures are only a guide but in the case of these 2 cars the distance they have fallen short is way bigger than the normal 20% or so.

But VAG have shown with the new 1.4 TSI (like I have in my Seat Leon) that great MPG is possible with small turbo petrols. Mine is 140 PS and has averaged 45 mpg in mixed use so far, that is more than I expected (18% short of the EU figure) and when the difference between petrol and diesel is taken into consideration it looks even better, it increases to almost 48 mpg. That is all I was getting from my slower BMW 118D over 5 1/2 yeasr of ownership. Basically my fuel costs have not changed since swapping.

So if the new Polo can manage the mid 50's in the real world it will in my opinion be an achievement but the Polo is quite big now, pretty heavy both of which don't work well with small engines.

They put the "Blue Motion" badge on cars that have stop start technology I have this on a Up I own and quite frankly its b***** awful.

Most models from nearly all manufacturers now have stop/start, its gets the CO2's down and thus we pay less RFL, if you don't like it simply switch it off. My BMW had stop/start and my Seat Leon has it, don't have an issue with it at all.

You're very welcome. ;)

The "new" Polo's interior actually looks a nice place to be in.

I guess that's what get's people into VWs.

Got a Fiesta EcoNETIC via work - it has stop start but does not work when you first drive the car. this is when it is most needed on the way to work!!!!!

The OP was asking about a Polo Blue Motion, your excellent feedback about the Up is totally irrelevant.

Gets with an apostrophe! That's appalling. I must apologise for the lack of grammar.

(Where is the dunce's hat?)

Forgiven!! So many people don't care.

I suspect that the age of the small diesel is coming to an end - provided that the new type of petrol engine can prove itself with economy. I believe that the problem with the Fiat Twin Air engine is that you need a heavy right foot to make reasonable progress - and thus poor economy.

The VW Up and its Skoda and SEAT siblings are getting a good press for being nippy and economical (although clearly Collos's relation has had a bad experience),and VAG see no need to offer a diesel engine in it. It'll be interesting to see the real-world mpg of the new petrol Polo.

I've read that thew Polo GTi is to get a manual gearbox option now as well as the DSG.

That might open it up to customers who previously dismissed it.

[Described as significantly smoother and more flexible than predecessor engines, the 74bhp unit in the TDI BlueMotion model is claimed to develop peak torque of 155lb ft at 1500rpm for improved standing start and in-gear acceleration along with a combined 88.3mpg and 82g/km.

Even bigger fuel savings are made with the new 89bhp unit, which is claimed to have a 21 per cent reduction in consumption at 83.1mpg and 89g/km against the 65.7mpg and 112g/km of the earlier 89bhp 1.6-litre four-cylinder diesel it replaces.]

I see that the diesel BlueMotion version isn't dead.
