It's just a comedy programme - if you laugh, carry on watching - if you don't find another channel.

Can't watch it.

From what i read if Clarkson ridicules a make or model then it can really have an effect on sales...this i find hard to believe, indeed it works the other way with me.

People don't really take anything either of those three say seriously, do they?

Americans do - they miss the humour altogether - but they think that all Brits are like one of the three stereotypes!

Not that you are stereotyping Americans! :o

It's sad that it is the only "motoring" program on BBC now.

I thought the American version had their own presenters? Although they seemd to be cast from the same mold.

< It's just a comedy programme - if you laugh, carry on watching - if you don't find another channel. >

By comedy programme, I suppose you mean it's a joke ? I haven't bothered to watch it for years, but I worry that some viewers may not think of it as a comedy programme. I don't think it manages to be either funny or serious. Even when it did try to be a bit serious, when JC test-drove a car we ended up knowing little more about it except whether he liked it. Little use really.

I certainly can't take it seriously - I don't understand how anyone can, but I know some do.

Why does it have to be of use? Why not consider it as great entertainment if you like the presenters and content as I do. Really looking forward to the new series.

I think of Top Gear as a kind of 'Last of the Summer Wine' for petrolheads. I never found Last of the Summer Wine very funny, but at least it was funnier than Top Gear.

Aimed at middle-aged men with a mental age of nine - Wackyracer

It certainly has evolved from the early days when the presenters used to just test drive the cars on the roads and then would never say anything bad about the car.

I enjoy Topgear, but i have to record it so i can fast forward through the bits i dont like, such as a (non) Star in a cheap car, and hate the destruction stuff, but some of their long drives are good fun. But its not about motoring, its just fun for a sunday evening for the 9 year old in me.

Aimed at middle-aged men with a mental age of nine - RicardoB

I agree with the producer. It's a bit of escapism. Bit of a laugh and so what that most of the cars they test bear no resemblance to real life for most of us?

They've made millions from it for themselves, of course, which makes me think "wish I'd thought of it", but it also sells around the world.

And as well as some of the nonsense, many of the films are superb - the ones of Clarkson especially simply driving cars that again, most of us will never get near, let alone drive or own, but explaining and pointing out the finery of them, and the dangers of the likes of the Grauniad PC brigade threatening to take away what "joy" there maybe left in motoring.

As I am middle aged now, but remember what it's like to be 9, I have forgotten for now which cars and tests I am talking about, and even the name of that bridge in France that they love. Also, I usually have no idea who the "star in the car" is and as someone else said, the destruction stunts are not my cup of tea. But hey ho, I'm just a punter. And there is aways an Off or channel change button if need be!

Used to be a fan when it was a lot more natural, now all of the 'accidents' are massively set up and not even slightly disguised anything else. Makes it predicatable boring slapstick.

The test drives are now 'my car is better than your car', without any real justification other than 'I like Porchse's', 'Aston Martin's are English', repeatitive and boring

Haven't watched for a fews years, but did used to enjoy it, but as I say, now its just the same old things rehashed with slightly different cars and/or caravans that manage to get destroyed/set on fire in slightly different ways... yawnnnnnnn

Aimed at middle-aged men with a mental age of nine - Ed V

It actually suggests that all middle aged men have part of them that remains 9. True dat!

Aimed at middle-aged men with a mental age of nine - Snakey

Yawn, bring on the annual top gear haters thread!

I like it. So if you don't like it don't watch it and quit moaning. Personally I find eastenders awful but I don't whinge about it and call everyone who does watch it - I simply change the channel.

Isn't it about time the naysayers realised its a pure entertainment program, and the reason its popular is because of its simple non-serious attititude. I don't want to watch some tedious d***** like the old top gear where a bloke in a strange sweater discusses compression ratios.

Aimed at middle-aged men with a mental age of nine - groaver

Yes but TG is shown on a taxpayers funded channel.

I demand more motoring shows for my licence fee!

Aimed at middle-aged men with a mental age of nine - sandy56
Personally I cant watch it. I find it infantile, but others like it and TG has a big fans base.
So if you like it watch it.

I don't.
Aimed at middle-aged men with a mental age of nine - Gibbo_Wirral

I wouldn't mind so much if there was some variety. But its always the same:

Start out with Clarkson driving a supercar

News - or two minutes of pointing and laughing at new cars

Minor celebrity comes on to plug their new book or film

Challenge or road trip (although the latter is usually reseved for Xmas specials)
