P/Ex Imported car - lower value? - Simonjc1

Trying to part ex a 2011 Mondeo which is a German import (but Uk Spec) and dealers are telling me that I should sell privately because they cannot value it the same as a UK car. Why on earth not? Whats different about it in the era of pan european warranties and the single market?

You say its UK spec why did you buy it in Germany?

The pan-european warranty generally has less provision than UK-supplied car warranties - savvy buyers would choose a UK-delivered car rather than "import" or expect a discount, so naturally dealers will offer less as p/x.

I bought it from a serviceman who had bought it in Germany then bought it back to UK. Its just out of manufacturers warranty so that should not be a factor.

The question to ask is if you were buying it would you expect it to cost less than a UK sourced car?. I know I would.

I had an imported Ford Puma, saved almost £4000 on the UK price when I bought it new back in 1999. Sold in in 2005, in the end privately but none of the garages I tried PExing it at were bothered at all. All they were bothered about was the condition and mileage, one said he would take anything providing it wasn't a Renault. Was offered and finally sold for the same price as a UK supplied car.

With regards to warranty the European Ford warranty is better than the UK one. The UK one is one year manufacturers followed by 2 years dealers which, if you have ever tried claiming you will know covers basically nothing, it excludes trim and everything is definedby the delaer as trim, even the handbrake as a colleague found out. The European Ford warranty is 2 years manufacturers, far better cover but a year shorter.

Was the car delivered in the UK then exported under the arrangements servicemen normally used for private exports, i.e. no VAT and no road tax? You could then argue that it is a UK car which has simply been out of the UK for a couple of years.
