2013 CORSA SXI 1200 - poor acceleration - olivetree

Hi, I've had this car for three weeks now and am really dissapointed on it's performace.

I have had CORSA's now for years, and just part exchanged my 2007 plate for this car.

The 2007 car had over 100k miles on the closk, this new one has 7000, however , even at 100k.miles, it could leave the new one standing. This new car takes so long to get up to 60mph, and when you select 5th, it imediately falls back and if on a slight incline, requires to change down to 4th. again. It's been back to the dealers, they road tested it and put it on the diagnostic m/c. but with no falt showing or recorded . Is there a problem with the way the engine management system is programmed, and if Vauxhall is not willing to do anything about it, is there another solution to the problem. I really like the car, and if it costs me to have the problem remedied, then I am willing to hear all that has to be said on the subject. Hope you can help. regards.

It's worth checking whether the brakes are binding slightly. Find a gentle incline and see if the car moves in n eutral with the handbrake off.

The easiest thing to do is test drive another car of the same spec/year and compare its performance.

Thanks, I'll see if I can arrange that. It does roll at the slightest touch, so I would conclude that it's not a break problem.

Its quite a heavy car for a 1.2 NA engine, with a 14 second 0-62mph (thrashed mercilessly) time its not going to be a lazy easy drive.

Be thankful you don't have the slug like 1.0 litre of pure motoring hell.

We bought a Corsa D 1.2 (the 82bhp version) 18 months ago and it doesn't really get a move on until you get past 3,500rpm. It's a bigger and heavier car than the Corsa C (1085kg compared to 970kg for the old car), with quite long gearing too.

I also find the drive-by-wire throttle is awful, it's slow to react and inconsistent in town traffic.

I have driven two other Corsa D 1.2s as well as our own, and both were the same. Our previous Punto 1.1 (60bhp) felt livelier and quicker.

Thanks a lot guys for your comments, but does anyone know how to remedy the problem.

I feel that it is the way the engine is programmed, ie. vauxhall has developed a good little car in the Corsa, but hasn't came up with an answer to increase MPG, so they may have programmed the engine to accelerate gently in order to conserve fuel. This slightly increased MPG. might look better when promoting the car. I might be entirely wrong, but what is the soluion to it, since my last Corsa with the same engine, and been round the clock, could kick the veritable **** out of this new one.

Only way i know is to replace the car with one with a bigger engine (or lighter car) more suited to the way you drive.

Or drive it differently, keeping the revs over 3000 rpm when you want some decent acceleration....unfortunately thrashing them is the only way to make an underpowered vehicle move.

Me, i'd replace it, i hate having to thrash a vehicle to get it to move, no pleasure whatsoever.

Check the gear ratio's. I suspect Vauxhall used shorter gear ratio's on the Corsa C giving better acceleration (at the expense of higher fuel consumption and refinement).

This coupled with the greater weight of the Corsa D will account for the lost performance.

Thanks craig for your input. This non mechanical design of pedal to throttel linkage definately adds to the problem, especially when accelerating and 5th.gear is selected, the car falls back as if the engine had died, then very slowly accelerates. All this time you are looking at the MPG. read-out which is down arround 17-23 MPG.

At what speed are you engfaging 5th?

I rarely use 5th below 55mph.

Your absolutely correct, it's useless trying 5th. below 55 unless you are on a down hill or level road

SWMBO has a 2007 Corsa D 1.2 5 door. I've always been underwhelmed at the poor acceleration compared to daugther's 1.2 SXI 3 door whch is much quicker through the gears. The 5 door version seems to be a heavier car that needs the 1.4 engine.

Sorry, that's incorrect. Our 2010 Corsa D 1.2 has a MAF sensor

Yes,you are probably correct.Mine is a 2007 model and has a Map sensor.I think the system changed in around 2010.
