BMW 520D Auto - Failed turbo - HughR
My BMW Turbo has failed after 4 years and 61000 miles despite being serviced by BMW from new. The repair will be circa £1800 BMW have offered £1000 for good will leaving me with the remaining £800 to pay. I think they should offer more. Am I being unreasonable?

This is a very common issue on this engine.I would expect a turbo to last longer than 61k.Especially as Bmw are supposed to be a "quality"? product and the fact it has full BMW history.I would push for a better deal .No harm in asking.hth

Older BMW’s (pre 2005ish) had issues with turbos. The combination of long service intervals and poor design of Turbo oil separator (they clog) caused the turbo’s to fail. Hence the seperator being redesigned and you should ensure you have the revised version fitted.

BMW will part pay for the components to be replaced. It costs £1800 because rather than cleaning components like the oil cooler etc they replace them. So any good indy will clean them and most likely cost you less than £800.

IMHO i try and get them to all as it's faulty under the sales of good (against who you purchased) asuming you purchased new, second hand may be more of an issue.

Long term I would change the oil more often say 9000 mile, that goies for any diesel, also vital correct oil spec if used.

Good luck!

Have a look on ebay for a turbo, new/recon ones are much cheaper and secondhand ones cheaper still. When you have your new one change the oil at twice the recommended interval and you likely won't have any more problems.
