cyclops headlights - Happy Blue!

I someone has a bulb out on a headlight I can cope. You hope it will get fixed shortly. More recently however I have seen a load cars with not only one headlight out but the corresponding sidelight as well. So you think you have a motorcycle coming towards you.

Do these drivers not realise that in the event of an accident it will be their fault - even if they were effectively bystanders.

I thought this thread was going to be about those rather amusing cyclists who ride along with a military searchlight on their head, blinding all pedestrians.

I pointe out this problem to a driver and got the response 'it'll be picked up at the MOT' !

Never mind blinding pedestrians, what about the other vehicle drivers ????

There's a few of these annoying cyclists around where I live and find the super bright lights fitted to their helmets a danger to all road users. The brightness of the LED or COB lights fitted to the bike itself are bad enough if not adjusted correctly but having one fitted to your head where you dazzle where ever and who ever you look at is just plain dangerous.

How long would it take to get pulled by the police if you fitted a motion tracking spotlight to the roof of your car/van etc that followed your head wherever you looked eh !!!!

True. We even have a few arounbd here with these lights but even worse they 'pulse' on an off very rapidly making it a very unpleasant experience for oncoming traffic.

I've decided that the next time one approaches me (and providing there isn't any oncoming traffic) I will flash my lights on an off to give them a taste of their own medicine.

I am not anti-cyclist by the way. Happy to share the road with any law abiding user.

Excellent idea. Did you think of it yourself, or did you need a committee and a couple of bottles of wine to come up with it?

So the cyclist's flashing light is annoying you, so you decide to temporarily blind the cyclist for their sins, or the cyclist's light has dazzled you, so you do the same to them. We now have two road users approaching eachother with one, or both, unable to see.

Even the militant cyclist in the camp won't defend that practice. Neither do I approve of lights meant for nighttime trail rides being used on road.

Cateye and others make decent LED lights that provide enough light for lanes without dazzling in town.

Last nigh a Billericay 'yoof' jumped his BMX bike onto the road in front of me, from the pavement very suddenly indeed.

His bike was black, his clothing ..all matt black and it was at 6.30pm ish. No nearby streetlight..so pitch black. Or 'Hi Viz Black' as I call it.

He's a very lucky millytant cyclist indeed. I wish he did have a super bright light on his pointy little head. At least it would have been some use. As it was I spotted movement from the corner of my eye and then he suddenly appeared in the pool of my headlights, luckily I braked to a halt. Cat like reflexes....yeah alright old guy reflexes.

Oh how I chuckled and guffawed. Course any nearby observer might have misinterpreted that as being somewhat sweary........

I've seen 4 cars in the past week or so with no brake lights - I only knew they were braking because of the little extra strip that lights up in the rear window....I like to leave a big gap, especially in the wet on the motorway, but someone will hit 'em I'm sure

They probably want you to run in to the back of them to claim compensation.

I once owned a Volvo 340 that had a warning light on the dash that lit up if a bulb had failed. I never got the opportunity to see if it worked when the brake lights or the headlights failed. Mostly it worked when a rear sidelight failed. I wonder whether the plague of failed headlight and sidelights will trigger the EU into insisting the car manufacturers reinstate that kind of warning light.

The bulbs in the Volvo 340 were easily replaceable, unlike later cars. A couple of weeks ago I replaced the failed nearside low beam and sidelight on my Subaru - I still bear the scars. Today I replaced the offside low beam and sidelight as a precaution - not easy, but not as difficult as the nearside.

Done the run to S Manchester and back tonight (90 mile round trip for me). Loads of brake lights out, fogs on but duff headlamps, full fogs all round (it's only raining here) and a Landy with yellow headlamps and a set of red lights all around the back, like lorries have. Bizarre. Most amusing one was a J reg Honda Prelude with flip up lights - one of the flip ups was on, and one of the lower lights closer to the bumper. Made it look sort of drunken!

And I thought this thread was going to be about a 1950 Rover 75....

We can hope that this phenomenon will become less common witgh more cars having dashboard lights warning that a bulb has blown. Admittedly that won't have any effect on the 'leave it till the MoT' brigade.

Hit 'em in the pocket, the only thing many people care about.

Some real coppers back on the streets, on foot and in cars, some quick stops and tickets issued for £60 (and a producer for your trouble) a throw would soon see these lights fixed pronto.

Its bone idleness, you have to make it more time consuming and painful to the pocket not to comply.

Avant's post just remined me about the last time i drove a P4 Rover, drove my mate's one when he'd had a pint too many, we turned right out of a junction and i looked round at him only to find he'd disappeared, leaning aginst the door it had opened and he was out on the road, fortunately unhurt.

Problem is, for some newer cars you have to pay a professional to fix the problem. So it may be cheaper to take the chance?
