Toyota Avensis - Advice on buying a Toyota Avensis - cws

Friend of mine is looking to finally get rid of his ageing and problematic 307 (awful car!). He doesn't want to spend much more than £4K and needs a mid-sized estate car. The Toyota Avensis (T250 - 03>09) ticks many of the boxes - does anyone have any advice on which engine to go for and anything to look out for/anything they suffer with/engine type to avoid etc etc?

He doesn't want exciting - he just needs a reliable load lugger that will last and doesn't need constant attention. The car will be used predominantly around town on short runs.

The general consensus is to stick with a petrol engine. There were many problems with head gaskets on the diesel models though I'm sure there are lots that didn't have problems. To get some idea take a look at the following site to see owner posts www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/

Thanks. I do now remember reading on here that the diesels can suffer from head gasket issues.

If he doesn't mind going backwards the 406 is probably the best value and most reliable secondhand car on the market, especially the diesel and a lot cheaper. They are also easier and cheaper to repair if they do go wrong.

I have an 01 2.0. Hdi estate on 218,000 miles, I have had it for 30,000 and virtually nothing has gone wrong with it, still has the original clutch and DMF. I have obtained a couple for other people who have had a similar experience.

Thanks, however, he's been burned so badly with his 307 that he refuses to consider anything Peugeot ever again.

Personally I'd have recommended him to get a 2000-2005 Passat 1.9TDI, however, many of these are high mileage now and anything with sub-100K/genuine/good condition, seem to command a premium.

Based on the good reports we had read on here and elsewhere about the 1.8 petrol Avensis we tried the estate version when we last changed the wifes car (early 2010). We had a 1.6 TDCi C-Max at the time (which had been 100% reliable over 5 years) thus we were not expecting to get Ferrari performance.

The Avensis was a slug, nice car but a slug. No performance unless you kept it well above 4000 rpm, even lane changes on dual carriageways needed very careful planning.

Make sure you are happy with the performance before buying one.

Hi,

Don't get a diesel!!! I've got one that the head gasket went on. Luckily it was covered by a secondhand warranty otherwise it would have cost me £1500+. It didn't help that the dealer, Inchscrape completely ignored my request to contact Toyota and ask for a contribution..... they just waved the out of warranty policy document under my nose.

Never again will I EVER buy another Toyota!!!! Try looking at Kia's. Solidly built and if you get a fully serviced one for a reasonable price then you are on a winner. The 7 year warranty is a good backup too.

Hope this helps

Thanks - I keep on reading these warning about Toyota diesel head gaskets!

I hadn't even thought about Kia's, as my friend's budget is £4K max - I can't think of a mid-sized Kia estate that you would get for this money, other than a Sedona - if anyone can suggest one, I'm all ears.

Toyota have just swithched to Mercedes sourced diesel engines they have never been able to make a succesful one but then again the petrol engines are not much better.

I inherited a toyota Avensis 2 litre D4D 2006 as a company car, when it went back at 80k miles and 3 years old, we had no trouble with it.

My second Avensis 2 litre D4D tourer, 2009 did 150k miles in 3.1/2 years, only problem was a parking brake actuator needed replacing.

I am now on my 3rd 2 litre D4D Avensis as a company car, 20k miles so far, no problems.

The cars are all serviced every 10k miles (12.5k miles) for the latest car, without fail.

Either other posters have been unlucky or I have been lucky.

Have I been VERY lucky, or is it due to my driving patterns? for example.

My work journeys are never less than 70 miles each way so the engine thoroughly warms up. I do very few short journeys, using it for personal use at weekends, my shortest journey is 6 miles and I never drive it half a mile to the local shop.

My last Avensis, 2 litre diesel, 150k miles in 3.1/2 years was serviced every 10k miles, I regularly checked the oil and never had to top it up as it never used any oil between services.

Robin, are you referring to the 2.2 dcat d4d? That is an awful engine. I have the 2.0 d4d and it is reliable so far after 6 years. I do 30k per year in mine and it's serviced every 10k with 5k oil changes. Toyota are staring to use BMW diesel units, not Mercedes Benz.
