Road closures - chewer1

Is it just me or are Councils now closing roads completely for road works rather than maintaining traffic flow with lights where possible ?

This seems to be common practice around here with Tandridge Council on country roads that end up with long detours that seem to me at least not to be justified.

I can understand that this possibly makes it easier / cheaper ? for them but sending everyone on a long detour adds costs and time to everyone else. I have also noticed that they do not seem particularly bothered about carrying out the work quickly.

I agree that it seems that roads get completely closed for repair more often than they used to. I guess the reasoning is that the job is completed sooner, so the total disturbance is less. I recall being irritated by Route Barree signs in France 20 or more years ago, and having to find detours for myself.

But I get more irritated by the duration of closures after even fairly minor motorway incidents. The authorities have assumed the right to take as long as they like measuring things and tidying up. The recent incident on M55/M6, which happened in the late evening, closed the road until the middle of the next morning. Of course we don't know the full story, but AFAIK there was only one car involved, being chased of course.

The length of time it takes the police to investigate a RTC is directly related to their lack of resources - doubling the number of traffic investigation officers would halve the time - but that extra cost would have to be met by the taxpayers who don't have infinitely deep pockets.
