Stuck on which car to buy, any suggestions? - nathanr

General requirements:

- fit 3 kids in the back, and either the large dog or luggage in the boot (estate or 4x4)
- comfortable to do 2000+ miles per month, on a+b roads in scotland
- won't get stuck in 2-6 inches of snow easily
- budget 7-16k, ideally around 10k, looking in the used market
- something that would be expected to last 2 years comfortably
- indifferent on running costs, prefer to keep them lower but also prepared to average out 25mpg if the car is say 11k or under.
- either a newer cheap estate (2010+) that feels new, as an example a 12 plate avensis is exactly the same as an 08 plate avensis and thus doesn't feel "new" (as in from this decade) and is hard to justify, an 11/12 plate mondeo 2.0 deisel estate does feel "new", as does a 13 plate avensis after they updated the interior and console etc.

or an older (2007+) small to mid 4x4 which has a feel of quality, thus far I really like the 2.3 petrol cx-7 (thirsty!) from around 08, the 10 plate rav-4 2.2 xtr deisel (top end of budget), and similar sized (sportage, tiguan etc)

If I had a huge budget I'd go straight for the 2013 Rav-4 which I've been driving for the past 3 months, and it suited perfectly.

I'm finding it really hard to find something, the newer cars feel less quality as obviously an 18-22k car from the past couple of years doesn't "feel" like a 40k car or 4x4 from the 5-6 years ago.

Any suggestions, do you have matching requirements to me and already have something that does you well? please advise.

Don't ignore the Hyundai Santa Fe and it's sibling Kia Sorento - few cars have more internal space - value for money on used ones is excellent - you may be surprised just how good the recent ones are - stick to 2010 onwards to get the much better engine and 6-speed transmission - you'll also get some manufacturers warranty because they're so long.

You mentioned snow / Scotland - the OE tyres will be useless on most cars, so get some Pirelli Scorpion for summer and good winter tyres for the bad bit.

Subaru legacy estate?

Or Subaru Outback - it's a Legacy Estate with extra ground clearance.

Other than a caveat around the snow thing a Citroen Berlingo or it's Peugeot counterpart fit the bill.

Three full size seats in back, loads of space for Fido, and comfortable enough for 2k miles a month. With care and posibly winter or MS tyres it should be able to cope with snow provided it's driven appropriately.

Your budget would extend to a new one via a high volume dealer such as Perrys or a consolidator. We got a 115/XTR 5 speed manual in September for 13.8k OTR. A 90 would be considerably cheaper as would a lower trim. Care though as the volume dealers seem to order large numbers of mid range 90s without aircon.

I'm with Oil Rag - a Legay would be great for what you are looking for.

Thank you so much for the suggestions so far.

The Sorento looks good '10+, hard to weigh against the Rav4 '10 for the same kind of price, I think I'll need to try them both - impressed with the fuel economy and space though!

Subaru's, I don't know why I hadn't considered them! My boss used to have one way back in 2004 and I remember being quite impressed, I'll certainly need to go and get inside one and have a drive to compare - very interested to see how they stack up against the other more common estates I've driven recently (Insignia <hate>, avensis, passat, a4 etc).

X-Trail has been suggested elsewhere, limited leg room in the back may be a concern with teanage kids, again I think I need to see it.

Please do keep suggestions coming, or things to flat out avoid!

I thought the Lagacy had the (now common) uncomfortable middle rear seat problem? As does the Sorento, the Santa Fe is a (tightish) seven seater - don't over look the Ford S-Max, three full sized individual seats across the back, big-boot (when the 6th and 7th seats are folded!) and terrific to drive for that class of car.

Volvo V70D would suit you fine, would last 20 years never mind 2. Swmbo has one...03.....157k and does a lot of miles every week and pretty good in the snow.

Hmmm I think your wife's been lucky, sticking electronic handbrake (common) cambelt failure (common on 2.4s) electrical niggles, suspension alignment issues - the V70 isn't the same trusty ol' steed Volvos of old were.

A Skoda Octavia estate is worth a look - there should be more of them to choose from than Subarus, and any VW Group dealer can service them. See if you can find a 4x4 Scout version. Cheaper than a mechanically identical VW Passat or Audi A4 and there's no loss of build quality in comparison.

Sounds a lot like a 2009-2010 Honda CRV diesel would tick all the boxes, surprised nobody has mentioned it yet.

volkswagen SHARAN, big and heavy, won't get stuck în snow.

Winter tyres are a must have if you don't want to get stuck în snow, at least where I live...
