Toyota Yaris 5 door hatchback 1999 998cc V624LBM - Serpentine belt - misterbee

Hello all, My son has only had his car a few weeks and hey presto the belt has come off, worrying he informs me a bit shredded. I am sure we can sort the replacement belt but is shredding a sure sign of a pulley fault or oil /coolant leak or could it simply be worn, many thanks for any contributions, Brian.

Unusual

Son has a 1.0 Yaris and I have replaced the belt when 10 years old- little wear but some cracks.

Possible causes:

Belt too loose - it would have slipped when cold and you would have heard the screech.

Failed power steering - pump seized- heavy steering

Failed tensioner - in middle of belt run. Possible.

Failed alternator - you would have had warning lights before.

Failed water pump - overheating. Warning light and leaks.

Try turning all by hand. and note any stiffness or wobbles.

My money - in order - is one:

tensioner. water pump or alternator.

Or just wear and contaminated by oil - but they are very tough.

Changing is easy but you need to remove the engine mounting.. and jack up the engine .
