It was announced yesterday that motorway tolls for cars will be introduced in Germany starting in 2014 will the UK be next.

Correction to Andy Bairsto's post - a vignette system is intended to be introduced, with a law being enacted in 2014 if possible, ensuring that owners of cars not registered in Germany wishting to make use of the autobahn network make an appropriate contribution while at the same time ensuring that no owner of a car registered in Germany is subject to a higher tax burden than at present. Since this all has to be in conformity with EU law, commentators expect that it will never be introduced.

Correction to the last post,Nobody nows the exact workings of the system I repeat nobody the only proviso is that it should be revenue nuetral to a German citizen ways and means of returning the money have not yet been decided unless the previous poster knows something the German coalition does not .

My main point is that it will not long before its introduced in the UK all the infrastucture is or has been already installed ready.

I see no infrastucture for paying tolls on UK Motorways, unless you mean ANPR cameras which do log journeys and keep the records but that is a long way from a system for collecting tolls using that information

The main infrastructure is in the gantries and the control units which have been installed on the MI and M62.It will provide selective toll pavment as proposed on the Bradford Leeds section of the M62.You dont think they put up all those gantries for a few cameras.

I agree that gantires are part of an infrastructure but there is no equipment in place (SFAIK) yet, to detect passing cars and bill their drivers for the use of the roads. That is a much bigger deal than 1000 ANPR cameras!

I expect road pricing of some sort to arrive here within the next 10 years however its monitored and billed, one of the many excuses being to help cut the ever increasing traffic jams as they cram yet more people (and cars vans lorries buses to service them) into the country.

Just another revenue stream to fritter, you can't blame them, people readily pay existing tolls and the roads/bridges/tunnels already tolled are traffic packed so the public are obviously willing and able to pay more taxes.

It would be good if it encouraged rapid progress. How about tolls based on your average speed - anyone averaging less than 60 pays double. Having just returned from Germany [where you can see circular red 120kph speed restriction signs with a line through them at the end of busy bits!] we crawled up the MI clogged with cars doing 65mph in the middle lane overtaking traffic doing 59 in the inner lane.

And as for lorries, one doing 56 and the other overtaking at 56.1, aaarrrggghhh!

We've had road pricing for years - it's called Fuel Duty - it's proportional to the number of miles travelled and size of vehicle, easy to collect as well - all they need to change is a method of collecting equivalent fuel duty from foreign trucks.

Foreign drivers having to pay the toll using the Auto Bahn according to this article I was reading.Germans arn't that happy with the road system about 4 billion pounds is needed to bring M/Ways up to scratch.If the Government is thinking about it,it will happen,>;)

With 'non stop' tolls due to be introduced at the Dartford Crossing on M25 in the next year or so this will be an excellent test bed if ever the decision is made to expand tolling across the motorway network.

It was part of the last labour governments election manifesto to remove the toll once the bridge was paid for and like all political parties they renaiged on this as soon as they came to power .

I totally agree you can travel all over the world and you would not see a greater self inflicted traffic jam on such a major road.

The toll should be scrapped as it paid for the bridge long ago. There is no more reason for it than there would be for a toll on the A1 across the Ouse or the road through the Blackwall tunnel.

Noticed on a map of Ireland that they seem to have introduced seleted pinch points that are tolled. Example the joining together of the M5/M6. Has anyone noticed or used these roads.
