2003 Ford Escort Hatchback - Boot lid will not stay open. - bluenun

I was abroad for 3 months and left my car covered up.

It started first time, the only problem I noticed was the hatchback will not stay open.

I assume it is meant to be held open by the 2 pistons attached to the hatchback.

It seems strange that both would malfunction at the same time.

Anyone had this issue before?

Its an old car, they will have simply lost pressure. Buy some new ones, factors sell them, not worth bothering with struts from scrappies, they could well be just as bad.

Must have been one of the very last Escorts made.

Gas struts usually show their weaknesses and fail when the weather gets colder, if the car is fitted with two its very unlikely that just one will hold the bootlid up.

Easy peasy to fit, but worth shopping about for prices.

Thank-you for the replies and sorry for the typo.

It is a 2003 Ford Focus.

I will try the auto factors and try to get pattern parts.

I used to engineer gas spring installations for Rover and Land Rover - I'd advise against regassing services.

Likely to be partly the drop in temperature. At ten years old these things can get tired, but they don't all fail at the same rate. Should be possible to find a scrap car with them still in place so you can test.

Escorts ceased production in Europe in 2000.My struts still work perfectly after 14 years-but estate not hatch.
