Madness or inspired?

Bit of both I think - and a lot of it comes from the marketng boss so probably trying to catch a few headlines and make out that Alfa is a 'proper' drivers car.

Less electrics in an Alfa may make them more reliable.

The future of Alfa Romeo - Collos25

They are no more unreliable than most other makes of car.

Another comment from the Collos book of Fairy Tales.

'Course they are! Take a look at any of the reliability indexes - JD Power, Driver Power, What Car? satisfaction index. Always near the bottom.

The future of Alfa Romeo - Collos25

If you believe the JD index which looks at around 10% of a particular car god help you, AR may have been in the past poorly built but for the last few years have been better than most of the competition,I prefer to beieve the ADAC which actually counts all cars that they visit much more reliable.

Better built - yes

More reliable - No

especially the Mito. Guilietta doing better, but still behind more mainstream brands except Fiat (who are of course the parent company)

The future of Alfa Romeo - daveyK_UK

Fiat have improved reliability wise.

I can account first hand at how better built and more reliable the latest Doblo is compared to the previous model.

Im not saying they are anywhere near the Japanese and Korean manufacturers, but they are certainly getting better.

You talk some rubbish I bet you have never owned an Alfa.

I expect that reply means that you own one?

Since the unique selling point of Alfas for the last decade has been an offset front number plate, perhaps they do need to look at new marketing solutions!

I do like the offset number plate re-introduced in 1997 on the 156. Here it is many years ago. www.google.co.uk/search?q=giulietta+sprint&sou...8

Collos, you are quite correct, although I was very tempted when a colleague had an Alfasud up for sale in 1985. I ended up buying a Renault 16!

But what a dull forum this would be if we could only make comment and have opinions on cars we'd actually owned.

Lighten up and accept that other people will have differing opinions to yourself.

Going back to the OP...

There's an interesting argument here...if you're buying a supermini, less than 4 metres long, 80-90bhp, fwd,... there is a valid argument that a car of that size and (limited) performance only needs the sensible safety systems one would expect as standard, and little else - crumple zones, anti-lock brakes, airbags and ESP.

All the safety tech in the world wont stop a reckless driver on bald tyres skidding into you on a damp winter morning.

As for low speed "city-safe" brake control systems....designed to bail out impatience and incompetence...
