40 years without a licence - NARU

At a family re-union, I was hearing about a late great-Aunt who had never taken a test. She even managed to get away from the scenes of several accidents without anyone catching her. Fortunately no injuries.

I'm told she was quite a character, but I feel sorry for anyone who had their car bumped by her.

I'm told that many servicemen from WW2 never took a test - when the war ended any UK military driver simply applied for a UK licence.

Anyone over the age of 96 (!) need not have passed a driving test as they weren't introduced until 1934.

Spot on, my Dad never took a test, he learnt to drive in a bakers van at 16 with the baker riding shotgun. Because he could 'drive' he was give the job of ferrying troops around in India using Willys Jeep's.

Post war, he was given a licence because of his war time duties. He died in 1996 and had driven for 56 years test free. I have to add he was probably the best driver I knew, he drove lorries post war and then became a rep covering 30,000+ miles per year with a new company Ford Escort Mk1,2 or 3 every year.

My Dad's boss had never passed a driving test.

During the Second World War years he worked on a farm and drove farm vehicles. When the war ended he was just able to apply for a licence.

it was a simpler time.

I recall a time when Jimmy Saville was a respected guardian of Child safety telling us to clunk click.

Strange times indeed.

It's not even that hard to pull off now so long as the vehicle is tax'd, mot'd and insured.

I'm mates with a lad who drove without a license for years (I'm 23 now, as is he). He was driving his dads Saab 9000 at 13, regularly took us lot for a spin. So long as the car is insured, tax'd, tested etc it isn't going to fly any red flags on the police screen, you'd get away with it. This guy drove down a motorway with no insurance... you aren't going to get far.

Pre 1934 if remember rightly(I'm not that old),there was no such thing as a test and and people driving before that were given a licence-as for Army service, the Forces issued a "Certificate of Proficiency" which could be exchanged for a civilian licence.

Ah the good old days,

In my younger days i lived on a small island just off the coast and took my test literally round the block, and an emergency stop, failed to identify a no entry sgn first go but got it after prompting, but in the same year , bike test, car test, and 'cos i felt like it hgv, (don't know why).

those were the days....

From the middle east where youngrovergirls sister lives, sister went to get driving license, (she is 60+) shown great deal of respect by male in office and told, "Oh my sister" (very polite) come we will do eye test today and practical tomorrow,,, sorted.

ORB - the Shetland Isles still get a couple of concessions - learners don't have to be accompanied and cars don't need MoT testing - these concessions don't seem to extend to any other island groups in Scotland or the rest of the UK.

Watch out for middle aged folk with red number plates as well.

Other countries in Europe also introduced driving tests during the twentieth century, the last of them being Belgium where, until 1977, it was possible to purchase and hold a license without having to undergo a driving test

Whilst driving back from Germany was going through Belgium and I must say they have got to be some of the worst drivers in Europe.
