I was only saying the other day that I've not seen a Montego for ages.

There's an engineering place in Macclesfield that does tuning bits and parts for MG Maestros (and presumably Montegos), which must be quite a small market niche ...

Saw an immaculate 'L' reg diesel estate last week. Good cars, well designed poorly built.

Over the past couple of years there have been 2 MG Montego's racing at MG car club events. One was an estate. They are the only examples I have seen in years other than a Vanden Plas Montego in the paddock with a full roll back roof.

When I used to work for British Aerospace, we used to be able to get MG Rover cars at discount due to the BAe/MG Rover tie up. I had an MG Montego which was actually not a bad car and was pretty quick. Had friends who went for the Turbo versions but these had some frightening qualities, especially the Maestro which had terminal torque steer and felt like it would put you in a hedge if you were a bit heavy footed coming out of a bend.

For 40 years, I've been able to get BL, MG Rover, Jaguar or Land Rover cars on the affinity scheme as all my in-laws worked there - for much of that time a normal dealers' discount was more than the affinity discount - mind you I bought Hillman, Ford, Vauxhall, Subaru and Hyundai so blame me for their demise!

I had a Montego estate as a Company Car (don't laugh). It was a good practical car with a solid old Perkins diesel, but the body build quailty was rubbish and it was rotting well after it's two years alloted life span.

My B-i-L was at Press Car Preparation when the Ambassador was being launched so he brought one home - very impressively quiet but then he told me they'd stripped it down to the bare shell and added a lot of expensive sound deadening - the normal ones weren't nearly as quiet.

Good find! To be fair I don't think ANY normally used non-cherished A reg car would do much better...
