I was behind a VW BlueMotion car this morning.
The "eco-technology" in this car means that it shuts down at each set of traffic lights!

So, it took the driver an age to respond to a traffic light change. Fortunately, I don't live in London. I can see this car causing riots as people behind get slowed down.
Doesn't sound very green, either.

I have now had 2 cars with stop/start and have to agree they only save a thimble full of pertl/diesel once a flood. Having said that the time to press the clutch pedal down to re-start the car is no different to pressing the clutch down in a non stop/start car.

Driver to blame on this occation and not the car.

He had probably just purchased the car.

I won't be buying one. Surely it puts more strain on the battery/charging system?

BlueMotion sounds like something you might have to take to a main dealer if there are problems...

I'm increasingly aware of stop/start vehicles during my cycle commute in London. Don't seem any slower off mark than other vehicles. Like OP, I wouldn't want one myself as I don't need the complexity but AFAIK they have extra battery/starter capacity to cope with strains etc.

Blue is the new, or at least German, green. Calling it Green motion would have political overtones because the German Green Party is quite hih profile and with MP's etc in the Bundestag.

My first encounter with stop / start was in a hire car out of Oslo airport. I had a bad half an hour wondering why the blasted thing kept stalling ...

I have a 2013 Tiguan dsg auto which has the blue motion stuff mentioned.

I find the stop / start somewhat irritating, particularly if combined with the auto hold feature. If you are waiting for example at a T junction to pull out onto the major road, you get a pause while the engine starts combined with a pause while the parking brake disengages and as you turn the steering wheel you can feel the assistance ramp up as you begin to move. It’s like driving off from a bowl of porridge.

With dsg VW manage to engineer in a pause before the car will move anyway, you don’t need to make it worse.

I usually leave both off, though I use auto hold for a steep hill start where it works rather well.

My Yaris HSD has this facility. It causes no delay whatsoever. I can still out drag lots of cars if I wanted to. I just don't want to because the 'traffic light grand prix' is dumb and wastes fuel...oh and it's dumb. Did I mention it's extremely dumb as well? Pointless and dumb.

My Yaris HSD has this facility. It causes no delay whatsoever.

But it won't cause a delay with yours because its starting off on its electric motor and the engine only fires up if and when needed.

Don't you also have a proper parking brake, not the idiotic electric thing VW increasingly insist their victims have.

Is your hill hold transmission based or braked?

What is your evidence that the bluemotion system caused the hold up? There are plenty of reasons why lights may be missed. The person may also have simply stalled the car.
