Nissan Leaf - Spotted! - brum

Saw my first glimpse of the Nissan Leaf today. Travelling up the A1 somewhere between Stamford and Grantham I noticed a tiny white car stuck up the a***-end of a large HGV - slowly joining from a slip road.

I thought - whats that orrible looking thing? Must be a Nissan - but what?

As I flew past (thats a relative term because I was doing about 55mph) - I saw it was the new Leaf - the driver was literally less than a metre from the tail of a large Artic (in the wake) - he only blinked the feeble RH indicator for 2 or 3 winks - presumably all to save the precious electric juice.....

Had to chuckle, the next stretch of road turned out to be a long steady uphill climb....would he make it to the next exit?

Nissan must make the ugliest range of cars on the road of all manufacturers today.

Agreed! Juke, anyone? Although I'll make exception for the GTR because sadly I quite like them.

I'd love to have one of these, I'd save a fortune in petrol costs, but with a 80 mile return commute each day I'd be worried of running out of juice half way home!!

As above I would love a car like the leaf. It would be perfect for my commute but its at weekends the car would become un viable as this is when we use the car as a family going on longer trips where the range would be a problem.

If only thete was a way to charge them as fast as a standard car.

Whilst the concept may be good, i have to agree, the thing looks horrible, nearly as ugly as that Fiat 500L thing.

Is ugly as an old boot the new chic?, do ugly people buy ugly cars so they look good in comparison..:-)

I never said I liked the way it looked lol. Its the concept that I like and the fact it is so quiet.

'Ugly' might be the new beautiful. Even Mercedes-Benz seem to have signed up to that idea with their latest styling, with lots of random and unharmonious styling features on their latest A Class and B Class! Another car that seems to celebrate ugliness as 'cute' is the Citroen DS3.

But we've been here before, in the early 70's, when manufacturers were trying to move away from the clean straight lines of the 60's and so-called 'Coke bottle' styling came in, one of the worst examples being the Ford Cortina Mk 3.

Possibly, although the Morgan Aero 8 still beats the Nissan Juke as the ugliest individual design, I think!

The whole range isn't that bad, the 370Z and GTR are stand outs and the Qashqai is not the worst looking of the breed. The shame is that the Invitation concept car has not evolved into the new Note very well. The concept was a good looker for a small MPV.

I thought this too, and borrowed one overnight to try on my commute. The steering is extremely light, but once you get used to it, and the lack of noise, I found it to be a very pleasant place to be. The range was, as expected, the killer though. My commute is 35 miles each way, and a little hilly. I ended up having to draft behind large slow moving vehicles to make it back to work the next day. I ended up with 12 miles range indicated in the end, so I overcompensated somewhat. But had there been traffic, or water on the road, or it been windy, or I needed the heater on... I like the idea of this kind of car, but the range just didnt suit my needs.
