Our AA renewl was due 30th August but we cancelled as we had bought 3 new cars all with AA or RAC cover with the car.

We discovered that a request for payment had been made before our policy was actually due !

I cancelled the renewl before the excisiting policy was due but payment was taken.

Countless phone calls to the AA mostly 27-29 mins each time explaining the whole story all over again & then told I have to wait 10 days well guess what still no refund 19 days later

Ringing up the AA you might as well talk to a brick wall ! I have been a member for 26 years with only 1 call out ever and all they can find is a record for home insurance quote & a policy in 2010 ! so still £250.16 pence out of pocket

They are so keen to sell sell sell but not so keen when it comes to refunds !!!!!!!!

Very simple solution (assuming they took the money via a Direct Debit) is to go to your Bank and ask them to reverse the charge.

This they are required to do under the DD guarantee and they (the Bank) have to refund the money to you immediately and separately obtain a refund from, in your case, the AA.

Have just done this with a DD with Virgin. Three emails warning them NOT to try and take an invalid charge were ignored and they took it. Went into my Bank and got it reversed without any problem (once the Manager remembered how to do it!).

Don't bother with refund promises - just take it back via the system!

More likely to be a continous payment authority via a card. Not as easy as DD, but money can be claimed back.

If it was a Direct Debit, then you're home and dry!

Before you go to the bank look up details of the DD Guarantee scheme on t'internet and digest the salient points; Bank HAS to refund immediately solely on your say so.

Counter staff tried to get me to phone their Customer Care Centre (even offered me the Bank's phone to do it). When I pointed out they had to refund, the Manager came out and from then on it was plain sailing. Amount credited to my Account the next day.

TBH I only did it as an interesting exercise to see how the system worked (the money wasn't a great amount), and was pleasantly surprise how easy it was and that's with HSBC.

Am eagerly awaiting a communication from VM........."where's our money...."etc

(I also warned them I'd charge them £50 if they went ahead, so I'll be asking how they intend to pay!!)

Slightly off topic, but same story with energy company. Service terminated 21st August and £247 refund cheque arrived today.

I tried to get them to make an electronic "faster payment" earlier in the week with a telephone call, by the response and drivel I got from the numpty on 'tother end, you'd have thought I had asked for a free unlimited supply of gas!
