If your average speed is below 30mph(50km/hr), the hybrid will yield a significant improvement in economy. If it's above 40mph (65km/hr), the consumption won't be significantly different.

To Unthrottled.

Congratulations, that's the best sentence that I've seen to justify to buy a hybrid or not on the basis of fuel economy.

On the subject of average speeds, I do 90% of my driving on A roads and motorways, every time I fill up (always at supermarkets), I zero the trip computer, average speed etc and I never achieve a higher average speed than the low 40s mph.

Marin, welcome.

Is LPG (Propane) as popular in Croatia as it is in Poland?

If so and if its as cheap as polish LPG then would a gas converted petrol Auris be more economical than either?

Obviously this doesn't take into account the warranty situation if the car you want to buy is new...unless Toyota have local agreements in place for gas conversions and warranty.

Low forties is a pretty good average.

The average speed criterion is helpful to anyone whose existing car has a trip computer. The neat thing is that it should predict the correct result almost irrespective of driving style, geography, or journey length.

Have had a mk 1 Auris Hybrid for 21 months - I got a subsidy from our local regional government in Spain which basically meant the "hybrid" element was free - so I got a petrol automatic at a good price. Living in a rural area I don't get the hybrid benefits from commuting, and probably 80% of my mileage is on motorways usually with cruise control activated. My last four cars have been used similarly with the following results:

2.0l diesel manual = 49.3 mpg

2.0l diesel DSG auto = 50.4 mpg

2.0l petrol auto = 37.7 mpg

1.8.petrol hybrid auto = 54.8 mpg

If I had less motorway miles mid-60s would easily be achieved.

Downsides of "CVT" hybrid - can be a bit noisy climbing hills. Otherwise, it's a proven method - 5+ million Toyota hybrids, and is being copied finally by other manufacturers

Not an entirely fair comparison! The 1.8 motor only wheezes up 100hp which is on a par with 1.5l diesels. Most of the current 2l class diesels belt out upwards of 150hp.

You're forgetting the electric motor - combined petrol and electric motors = 136 hp. The car drives on the petrol, electric or combination of the two. Whilst in EV mode it can do only 1km or so, when you are driving along the electric motor cuts in to boost power as the batteries are charged when on overrun and braking.

Anyway, irrespective of power, the comparisons are based on similar driving scenarios - the power aspect only comes into play in acceleration - as previously stated I tend to do a high percentage of mileage at a steady speed on motorways, and the "wheezy" engine combined with the electric motor is adequate

I didn't forget it-I omitted it! The OEM quoted 10.9s 0-62.5 time belies the 136hp combined hp claim. This is longer than the time (10.3s) for the 125hp diesel-which is hobbled by two gear changes.

Toyota aren't being entirely straight forward about the combined power claim.

That said, you don't need 130+ hp to move a 3000lb car along at an entirely satisfactory pace.

Welcome to the forum, Marin - possibly our first from Croatia.

As suggested above, the hybrid is at its best in town driving:if that was what I mostly did, I'd have a Prius. But if you do a lot of driving on the open road, the performance is not that great and the CVT gearing leads to noisy and frenetic acceleration.

But the hybrid concept is improving: read the reviews of the Audi A3 e-tron for example.
