Advice needed, best used diesel hatchbacks? - HannahBaker

Hey. My work has recently relocated from central London to Milton Keynes and subsequently I've gone from using my car maybe once a week to driving 130 miles a day! I currently have a Peugot 206 (with various minor problems) and have been looking to buy something new for a while and this feels like the best time to do so. I know nothing about cars so would like some advice with what to look at buying? I'm told a diesel will be more economical with the long drives, I prefer a smaller hatchback type car and I have a budget of £5000-£6000, obviously looking to buy second hand. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Try looking at a seat Ibiza or Leon. Both are obtainable with Diesel engines, are economical and should prove reliable.

Are you sure 130 miles a day is a sustainable commute - presumably M1/M25? It would kill me!!

How easily could you pick up the Euston>Watford>MK railway?

A rail season from Watford to MK is £3300, probably £4k from Euston. Fuel alone for a 220 day working year will cost you more than that.

Hyundai i30 it's a no brainer. Chain cam and no dpf on earlier models. I live near mk and used Hyundai in stony Stratford excellent customer service.

It all depends on how near to MK station Hannah's work is. MK was designed for the car and I suspect the bus service may not be up to much.

For this journey there wouldn't be a problem with the particulate filter clogging up, but if going for a SEAT or Skoda the 1.9 diesel engine is more reliable than the 2.0 unless you can run to the common-rail 2.0 from 2009 fitted from 2009 onwards. As suggested a Hyundai i30 is a good idea, or a Kia Ceed. Also think about a Ford Focus or Toyota Corolla / Auris diesel: avoid Mazda diesels which have had problems.

You could go smaller - Ford Fiesta or Toyota Yaris - but make sure you'll be comfortable on a long daily drive.

Indeed, the moniker Milton Keynes Central is pushing it some as station is on western edge, down by A5. Long way from there to industrial places by M1. OTOH maybe the buses ARE ok or Hannah could keep a bike at the station.

Hello, thanks for the responses! I'll take a look into the suggestions, someone at work mentioned a Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDI so it's good to see that crop up!

I'm still thinking about getting the train but it's looking at being a longer journey, and my trains are usually screwed on a Sunday, I do shift work for 12 hours a day so an extra 20 mins on my journey sadly makes a difference! Believe me, I'm far from happy about the move and am currently job hunting but who knows how long it may take so best set myself up for the most economical drive in the meantime!

Thanks again,

Hannah

If you look at Fiestas, I would strongly recommend the 1.6 TDCi over the 1.4, not only for the bit of extra punch, but for it's much smoother engine and power delivery.

It's a more modern engine than the 1.4, and is actually slightly more economical. Similar road tax cost or as makes no difference.

Racking up those mileages you need the youngest, lowest mileage car for the budget. I suspect i30, ceed will meet these main criteria.

I have no particular small car recommendations, but before you commit yourself to a small hatchback it might be worth thinking about something a little bit larger for this much longer drive, which is going to be completely different to your previous motoring.

Small hatches are as you know already owning one are noisy at motorway speeds and a little 'unsubstantial' for long drives, a larger saloon will without doubt be quieter unless its fitted with huge wheels and elastic band tyres.

Its often the case too that the larger saloons tend to be just as good on fuel as the small hatches, possibly better aerodynamics but also often have taller gearing better suited to motorways.

Not suggesting you go for a blinking great Volvo or Benz, good cars though both are, thinking that if a saloon would be considerable for you then you might well get more metal and newer and lower mileage for your money than the standard hatch.

Thinking of something like this, have no knowledge of the garage or this particular car

There are dozens of other cars to choose from in this segment, if twer me i'd rather be in something just a little more substantial quiet and refined for such a lot of driving, plus if auto would be preferred then you have a much better choice of auto Diesels with real gearboxes in the larger cars.

Just give it some thought.

A Skoda Fabia Vrs with the 1.9TDi 130 engine would be a good bet. You can still pick up an 07 plate with a Skoda used car warranty from a dealership for a decent price.

As documented here the 130 engine is powerful, economical, a relaxing drive, and capable of huge milages, also no DPF to worry about.
