2003 Jaguar XJ8 4.2 V8 X350 - Top of engine rattle on cold-start only - Grandadbeard

My car has done less than 99,000 miles and drives beautifully. BUT when starting from COLD there is quite a loud rattle from the top of the engine which lasts for a second or two at the most, and then vanishes. There is no problem when starting the engine hot, only when cold. It has been suggested this may be worn variable valve timing units. Do you have any experience of this problem, and what may be the cure.

I would get a specialist to check the timing chains as this is a weak point on these engines and the chains are prone to snapping and creating huge amounts of damage !

Thanks for your thoughts and suggestion. I have already had it checked by a specialist and his diagnosis was probable v v t unit wear. Indeed Jaguar themselves issued a bulletin highlighting this problem and they quoted two engine numbers between which this problem may occurr. Unfortunately my engine number falls in the middle..... I have been in dicsussion with the factory and they simply do not want to know - almost as if the faulty design (which they have revised twice - so there must have been a problem) is not their responsibility. Regarding your suggestion about these engines having a potential timing chain problem, I am aware of this (and had chains and tensioners expediently replaced in my Daimler Super Eight some years ago) but I understood it applied specifically to the 3.2 and 4.0 litre V8, and that the later 3.5 and 4.2 V8 were free of this. Anyone else out there with experience and advice please?

If left standing for more than 3 days mine rattles on start-up, its done 75000 miles and serviced at the supplying main dealer from new. As soon as the oil light goes out it stops, I think the oil drains away from the bearings over time and running dry causes the noise. It's not helped by the high rpm that it starts at from cold 1300-1400 rpm. What rpm does yours run at when starting from cold? Does anyone know if the fast idle can be reduced to a sensible level? It has fresh Castrol Magnatec 5/30 inthe sump.

Grandadbeard, I started mine this morning with the bonnet open and I would say the noise is probably from the top although it is so brief it's a job to tell with certainty, I would describe it as a loud mechanical clatter. I put in my previous post that the noise happened after standing for 3 days but it does seem to vary if according to the length of the journey the last time it was used, it was out yesterday for about 8 miles and it clattered today. Any similarities with yours?

After doing a bit of research I suspected the vvt units so I took it to my local independant Jaguar specialist, he checked to make sure that there were no fault codes stored and although it had only done about 1500 miles since the last oil change, did a proper engine flush and an oil and filter change with fully synthetic 5/30 oil. Although there is still a slight noise sometimes it has helped no end and it was a lot cheaper than replacing the vvt units.
