Another fly on the wall doc this one about car dealers in an Essex car yard. It showed how they do the deals with the buyers to win them over and how nearly every deal was a skin on your teeth conclusion where one false move and the customer would have walked. Apparently they don't make huge profits on a sale and the salesmen have to do a sale a day to make a decent income on top of their basic.

Well I don't know how much of this was playing to the cameras but to have to do this job day after day and go through the agonizing haggles with the customer each time I think they earn their money.

It's great to see, in contrast to all the welfare stories of spongers, that there are still little battlers in this country who never say die and who keep the wheels of the economy turning.

Power to their elbow.

I thought the guy trying to buy the Range Rover was a 'plant'. An actor put there with a script to try and make it look more interesting.

Who apparently owed more to his finance company than his current car was worth!!

Didnt see that one but saw a random episode of The Garage, a television programme following the staff of English Mobile Mechanics in Marbella, Spain.

The interesting bit was the attempted repair of an overheating Range Rover Vogue by a "4x4 specialist". In the end the mechanic (quite rightly) gave up and resigned his job.

It showed you what a piece of badly designed and unrepairable expensive s*** a top of the range Range Rover is.

I agree they have to work long hours and it can be a struggle to achieve their commission, but if I were a customer, their silver-tongued sliminess wouldn’t do them any favours with me. Take the example of the girl and her father buying that Mini: The dealer said he could only possibly allow the deal to proceed if another £400 was forthcoming, because otherwise he’d be selling the car at a loss, whilst the father was saying the very best he could manage was an extra £100. The thing is, I would find myself finding it difficult to believe a word that drips from these sales guys’ oily lips: In the father’s shoes, if the sales guy could have shown me a trustworthy-looking invoice for how much he’d paid for the car, I would then happily have paid the further £400 and happily granted him his justifiable profit, and everyone could have come away happy. In the end I think the father came away probably sick in his stomach; feeling he’d very much been guilted into it by his daughter and somewhat duped by the salesman. What a lovely experience.

Wasn't it the skill of that salesman to read the situation, the body language. Daughter who HAD to have the car, other daughter thinking if sis gets this, I can get that, wife who couldn't have an upset daughter. Poor father, three (four with salesman) against one. Dad was done for.

And the poor work experience lad with the green socks and short trousers. Even eating a tea bag couldn't make him one of the lads.

I know the site, just by the side of the old A13. Modern day bomb site lot. Not the place I'd go, even though I'm an Essex boy (although moved out some years ago).

Good entertainment value and enjoyable, but the last place I'd go to buy a car.

Now the public know their "inside secrets", how can they hope to continue and make a profit. (But they will, no doubt)

I agree that the 21 year old Range Rover customer was either a plant or an actor. Or maybe his generation do just see a car they simply must have before doing any research into insurance, finance, running costs, reliability, etc etc. If so, god help us.

Why does buying a car (new or used) have to be such an ordeal in this country! I spent a couple of years working in Germany and the experience was the polar opposite!!!

I bought a 7 year old golf from a used car dealer in Hamburg and I was presented with all the facts of the cars history - servicing, receipts, road safety tests and a full 12 month warranty, along with a free independant inspection. It was a joy, had a problem with the rear demister a few months down the line and the garage picked the car up from my place of work, dropped a courtesy car, and delivered the car back with a new rear screen a day later complete with a valet.

That may have been a one off, I dont know for sure but from other folk I spoke to, it seems thats just they way they work.

My experience whilst enquiring about a used car at a large Scottish chain the other day was enough to make me almost buy a bus pass

Tried watching it last night, managed for 2 minutes and then turned over.

I found it cringeworthy, calling everybody mate. There's a large main dealer near me, I went there once to look at a used car with my son, after being addressed as mate numerous times, I left never to return.

The customer isn't their mate, more like another cash cow to be milked.

Any Devon residents care to comment on the 'Essex girls' remarks?

We were talking about this in work, those Devon (or Dorset?) drivers probably have better, newer, cars than the one she was going for. Bought and paid for, or at least financed, in their own name!!!

Im quite enjoying the programme! Wouldnt like to mess with the Polish guy in valeting though!!!

Funneeee! The blond one going on about they don't need nice cars in Devon because of all the dirty fields. It seemed like an episode of TOWIE, perhaps she was looking for a part.

The Range Rover Customer was not a plant or actor. My Fiancée has met the lad & WAS Boyfriend to a lad both me & my Fiancée know. She has seen the Qashqai he wanted to swap and is on regular contact with his ex, and so am I via FB. Just deal with the fact that there IS shallow people out there that are willing to go into deep debt to appear wealthy amongst their (supposed) peers.

As Greg from the Essex Car Company quoted at the end of an episode I unfortunately stumbled across this evening "...come and see us, we are not monsters..." A classic and very subtle piece of self promotion!? Did Channel 4 attempt to portray him as a "David Brent" type figure or is that just the way it come across? Come on Channel 4. You can do better than that! A poorly written documentary with very little substance or entertainment value.

We bought a Fiesta from the Essex Car Company in January 2010 and had nothing but problems with it. After purchasing it from them with the understanding that a multipoint check was carried out with each vehicle that was sold (especially as they have their own servicing team on site to carry out such checks) we were very disappointed to find out that there was a mulitude of problems with the car after we had it independently checked once we took it home after some rattles and noises alerted us on the motorway home.

These consisted of a worn engine mount, a buckled alloy wheel and 2 unroadworthy and illegal tyres. We complained immediately and they accepted this and changed the engine mount and replaced the wheel and tyres with second hand parts.

As the work couldn't be completed the same day we requested a courtesy car. They offered us an old and dirty Renault Megane. This unfortunately had an engine management fault which caused the car to stall several times and had dark tinted windows all around which certainly rendered the car unroadworthy and illegal. Essex Car Company refused to offer insurance with the courtesy car unless we paid extra or signed an form whereby the courtesy car was insured was covered under our personal policy.

All in all a horrible car buying experience, of one I would never like to repeat!

My wife still says it was the worst car we ever bought.

The Dealership Channel 4 last night. - V4 Heaven

I've always bought from private owners. Most of the stock which is available at these independent dealers is bought from auction, as was shown last night, so the cars are of dubious quality anyway.

Was toecurling watching Scott stony faced trying to effectively force the father and son customer to make a decision there and then on the Range Rover....I felt for him, glad he gave his notice in as he clearly was not comfortable in the job.

Great series this is turning out to be, rivering stuff.

The Dealership Channel 4 last night. - Engineer Andy

I'm thinking this garage is only going to get the "sort" of publicity that that Hotel in Liverpool got for a similar "fly-on-the-wall" series a few years ago. Not good to air your dirty linen in public, unless of course things get much better by the end of the series (not too long I would hope, as people might not watch all the episodes and not realise the improvement later on).

Pointless post as I did not make an opinion about welfare spongers and I'm quite aware of greedy bankers thank you very much.
