well i havent ever heard of a bloke called caz, its short for caroline and IM A GIRL!
i did look at a £1,300 ford fiesta 1.8 diesel the other day but it looked like it had a water leak and mild rusting probas and the guy just seemed untrustworthy, he wasnt willing 2 negotiate a price either so i left it.
the cars im looking for are clios, peugot 105/106 ford fiestas, novas etc just small cheaper insurance cars.

Mileage is what you'd expect. If the car is mint, and doesn't need anything big like tyres or a cambelt, then I'd go up to £1200, not a penny more, even if you really want it. Make sure the car is prepared like I said and you have a budget for that. Any more and it depends what value you put on the bumpers and wheels, but make sure that the bumpers are done properly and not just spray painted plastic ones :-)
Your insurance quote is very cheap - Liverpool Victoria wanted £873 and they're normally excellent. I still think that mods would be a bad idea, but you're gonna want them anyway.
|
Oh and Novas smell. I like your taste otherwise. There's not much chance of getting a car with PAS in this price bracket, but you can hope, can't you?
|
cheers ill have to go and check it out to really get an idea, i was thinking go £1,250 lowest but ill see how cheeky i can be. the owner is my age and im blonde so it might help!
oh yeah and about the nova, i really dont want one, my bro had one and it was a pile of s***. thats just my mum trying to have her say again coz she knows best. i would be unbelievably embarrased driving one around, believe me.

1992 RENAULT CLIO 1.4RT,
92, K reg . 79000 miles, 5 door, 5 speed, 2 carefull owners, MoT 01/04, Tax 04/03, e/w, r/cl, radio/cassette with driver controll, immobilliser, s/r, psh.. £1,195.
Tel: 01442 391560
Distance: 1 miles
Price: £1,195
There's a picture as well. It's black, I'm guessing that psh. is PAS (?) and it's in Hemel. No alloys, but a great price. Actually I did a search on Autotrader and you seem to live in the epicentre of nice, old Clios. If that one hasn't gone, go see it.
|
Two things: Mark, the moderator, is so picky about swearing he's even banned the word s_o_dium because of the first 3 letters. Personally, I find the word Nova more offensive than the one you used, but be careful...
Secondly: Fiestas of that age rust. There is no such thing as a mild rust problem on a Fiesta; they're all addicted to turning brown and falling apart.

psh usually stands for partial service history.

unfortunately, thats the one that has been sold, i rung the guy up the other day. it was a good price too.
know what you mean about lots of fair priced clios, down here in bournemouth its alot more expensive to buy cars so im sticking to the hemel area.

ill come back and check the site again in futre youve all been very helpful.
ps, if you get any info on any small cheap end cars can you let me know, cazatkins@hotmail.com.

Someone else from Bournemouth that has spotted the price hike for most cars, esp. student mobiles. I never buy here either!
Try North Dorset (Shaftesbury etc.) as there are loads of small diesels run as second cars out that way (strangely enough, most are on Red Diesel... that'll be the farmers then), so you have loads of choice and the s/h prices tend to be down, particularly in your price range.

I believe any supermini with close is 100k on the clock is going to be tired, with the exception of Mk1 Polo, as small cars are not designed to do high mileages. Things like interior on a 10-year-old Clio will be creaky and squeaky, central locking & eletric windows are going to pack-up soonner rather than later. More over safety should be your main concern as you would travel cross country at higher speed. I saw a crash near QE2 hospital the other week and the girl's 106 was shorten by at least one foot whereas the Mondeo has only superficial damages to bumper and lights. It was a head-on in town, I guess both parties cannot be doing much more than 20mph.
When I got my last car back in 00, I was looking for Ford Mondeo 1.6 GLX (ins. gp. 7) and Peugoet 405 1.6 GRI (ins. gp. 5 but with the 1.6 205GTI engine). They were the fastest car I could get at that insurance group. I settle with the Ford in the end, but a 1.8 (gp 9) rather than a 1.6, ran it for 45k and it worked out to be 20ppm all inclusive (ins., tax, depreciation, maintenance, etc.). All servicing done by Ford to keep up the history, nothing went wrong except it needed a new gaiter at one of the MoT.
For other back-roomers' information, my nissan qx has now done just over 6k since I last reported. My current and projected ppm for the coming year are 18.6 and 19.7 and I get 28mpg. I am very happy with it and surprised to find it is cheaper to run than the mondeo! I have taken it to road rallying twice so far and am getting used to the LSD fitted to front axle.
My next car will definitely be on LSD!
Best,
Garrison

£1300!!! I'm gonna start buying them at £300. Is this the easiest way to make a grand?
|
It would be if you could get them for £300... maybe as a particularly stroppy salesman offering a p/x but otherwise, no chance. I saw a K-plate, 74k 1.4 RT automatic, in good but not incredible condition, go at auction for £1200 a month or so back.
|
It might have reached that amount because it was a small automatic. A few years ago I saw a metro automatic go for nearly a grand when it was only worth a couple of hundred. My theory is that some private punters come to auctions desperate for an auto. If there are only 2 or 3 cars there they'll pay over the odds.
In October I remember seeing average P reg clios going for about a grand. Don't know if prices have gone up or down since.
|
I agree that £1200 is a lot of money at auction - I think you're right, small automatics are in a world of their own. Mileage is everything, and the people buying them often have no idea what they're getting.
I'd still find it hard to believe that a good early Clio with the right spec (1.4 RT, with electric windows, remote stereo, remote locking, soft velour seats and so on) would go for less than £600 and probably quite a lot more.
Garrison - interesting idea about the Mondeo but how many blonde 19 year olds would even get in one as a passenger? :-) I think the usual criteria are out the window here and girliness counts for everything.
I'll have a look out for one tonight.
|
Hey David, I had a new girlfriend during that period and she is inpressed with the ability and capability of the Mondeo!!!
Having said that, she was ... err, either scared or shocked ... when I took her along to a night rally. She never thought a Mondeo can be hassled along the yellow and white roads on OS Maps at 80-100mph.
FYI: A-roads are red, B-roads are orange, C-roads are yellow, tracks are white and she is a brunette.

cheers for looking for me, but i think that bognor regis is a bit far away, (Im not sure though as im bad at geography) but i dont really have much transport.
saying that though, that clio seems to be very fairly priced and is what im looking for really. how many miles away is it?
|
Caz,
Bognor is about 70 miles from Bournemouth, straight along the A31/M27/A27. Turn right at Chichester.
Used to live in Blinkin' Bognor (went to school there) and now live in Poole. Have family up that way so do the trip quite often.
On a clear weekend you should allow 90 minutes. Oh, and it's only about 45 miles from Haywards Heath, if that.
No Dosh

Caz - have you decided yet (I assumed you were a Caroline or a Karen or something but I wasn't sure)? It's fun trying to find the best bargain in the best condition, but all said and done, your big expense won't be buying a car, but getting it shipshape, running it and insuring it.
