Caz wants to buy a Clio - DavidHM
seen youre talking about buying cars and that the subject i need help on.
ive got my eye on a renault clio 1.4rt as my first car, its advertised on the net and the guy who owns it lives near me. Im 19 and a student at uni with little cash but enough to wanna have a car. The owner has put alloys on it and coded bumpers and wants £1,395.
questions, is that a bad price, whats the lowest i can negotiate with him and is this a fairly decent/reliable car as i need to go backwards and forwards from hertfordshire to bournemouth occassionally?

Give us a little more info about the car, like age and mileage... Or a link to where it's for sale?
Caz wants to buy a Clio - caz
Its a 1991, j reg j411lby but its done loads of miles about 92,000. i cant remember the site i saw it on, i think it was autotrader and i looked for clios in the near area to hemel hempstead, thats a Hp1 code.

this guys car is in there. there was another clio that was cheaper but its been sold and anyway, i have to admit i do like some modifications although they will bump my insurance up, being a first car and all. cheapest quote for that is £686 with Aplan in hemel.
keep replies coming, i appreciate it.

It's not a bad price for an L reg car (if that's what it is), but if it's your first car, there are a few things you need to know about. I'd try and get him down to about £1200 though.

Firstly, insurance. It needs to be in your own name, because otherwise the insurance company could refuse to pay up, it's borderline illegal to put it in your parent's name and then run the car as your own. Also, you'll never get any no claims and you might need the money more in a few years when you're buying a house or something.

Have a look at Liverpool Victoria (www.liverpoolvictoria.co.uk ) and Tesco (www.tescofinance.com/personal/finance/products/mot...x.
jsp
for good insurance deals.

Secondly, when you get the car it's a good idea to make allowances for things like a new cam belt (costs about £150, including labour, but will wreck your engine if it isn't done every 72k or 5 years), an oil change, new air filter, plugs and so on. The car might also need a little bit of work on things like tyres, brakes, shock absorbers or whatever - so it's hard to value a car like this without seeing it.

Coded bumpers and alloys look good, but they will push up your insurance premium as modifications. It might not be much, but then they won't add much to the value of the car either, so it would probably better to look for something which had them from the factory. Big alloys can also ruin the handling and ride of a car like this.

I like Clios. I drive an 89 Renault myself and a Clio 1.4 RT has a good spec, decent performance and reasonable insurance, as well as looking pretty modern. A good, well looked after one will be quite reliable. Just make sure that the last owner didn't spend his maintenance budget on alloys and then thrash the nuts off it like too many young drivers do. (I'm only 24 and feel like an old fogey, but then I use my car the same way as you would and it cost me less than £500 - and it works, so maybe it's not such a bad thing).

cheers for the info,

i know what youre saying about the insurance when it has modifications, my boyfriend has a toyota celica gt4 carlos sainz with 17" alloys, idonised dumpvalve, lowering springs and huge exhaust, he must pay a fortune, its a nice car though, its having loads of work done to it at the mo because of problems with the cv joint and clutch. i think hes looking 4 cv part if you know of any areas he can find it cheap(not the t garage, its £350 there).
im also glad you said about the insurance thing because my parents want to put it in my dads name and i want to do it myself, but being strapped 4 cash i really need them to fork out for insurance as an early birthday present or something. however, my mum especially thinks she knows best and is totally against me getting any car now until the summer!

thanks c

Caz - can't tell about the price, as you haven't told us age or mileage. My immediate thought is that while alloys may be nice, they are always nickable, and a student is probably better off with a car that attracts as little attention as possible while being as reliable and cheap to maintain as possible. Also can't be sure of your gender, but Clio definitely has a female cachet. Another thing to consider is low insurance cost, especially given the neighbourhoods students tend to live in. If you can stomach the idea of a small diesel, that should be cheap to insure, run and maintain, as well as being less tempting to joyriders. You may be able to find a decent Peugeot 309 or 205 (or Cit, MiddleMan?).

well i havent ever heard of a bloke called caz, its short for caroline and IM A GIRL!

i did look at a £1,300 ford fiesta 1.8 diesel the other day but it looked like it had a water leak and mild rusting probas and the guy just seemed untrustworthy, he wasnt willing 2 negotiate a price either so i left it.
the cars im looking for are clios, peugot 105/106 ford fiestas, novas etc just small cheaper insurance cars.
Caz wants to buy a Clio - DavidHM
Mileage is what you'd expect. If the car is mint, and doesn't need anything big like tyres or a cambelt, then I'd go up to £1200, not a penny more, even if you really want it. Make sure the car is prepared like I said and you have a budget for that. Any more and it depends what value you put on the bumpers and wheels, but make sure that the bumpers are done properly and not just spray painted plastic ones :-)

Your insurance quote is very cheap - Liverpool Victoria wanted £873 and they're normally excellent. I still think that mods would be a bad idea, but you're gonna want them anyway.
Caz wants to buy a Clio - DavidHM
Oh and Novas smell. I like your taste otherwise. There's not much chance of getting a car with PAS in this price bracket, but you can hope, can't you?
Caz wants to buy a Clio - caz
cheers ill have to go and check it out to really get an idea, i was thinking go £1,250 lowest but ill see how cheeky i can be. the owner is my age and im blonde so it might help!
oh yeah and about the nova, i really dont want one, my bro had one and it was a pile of s***. thats just my mum trying to have her say again coz she knows best. i would be unbelievably embarrased driving one around, believe me.

1992 RENAULT CLIO 1.4RT,
92, K reg . 79000 miles, 5 door, 5 speed, 2 carefull owners, MoT 01/04, Tax 04/03, e/w, r/cl, radio/cassette with driver controll, immobilliser, s/r, psh.. £1,195.

Tel: 01442 391560

Distance: 1 miles
Price: £1,195

There's a picture as well. It's black, I'm guessing that psh. is PAS (?) and it's in Hemel. No alloys, but a great price. Actually I did a search on Autotrader and you seem to live in the epicentre of nice, old Clios. If that one hasn't gone, go see it.
Caz wants to buy a Clio - DavidHM
Two things: Mark, the moderator, is so picky about swearing he's even banned the word s_o_dium because of the first 3 letters. Personally, I find the word Nova more offensive than the one you used, but be careful...

Secondly: Fiestas of that age rust. There is no such thing as a mild rust problem on a Fiesta; they're all addicted to turning brown and falling apart.

unfortunately, thats the one that has been sold, i rung the guy up the other day. it was a good price too.
know what you mean about lots of fair priced clios, down here in bournemouth its alot more expensive to buy cars so im sticking to the hemel area.
thanks for all your help, i better get on and actually study now! course ill probably end up at home watching tv, its a hard life!
ill come back and check the site again in futre youve all been very helpful.
ps, if you get any info on any small cheap end cars can you let me know, cazatkins@hotmail.com.

Someone else from Bournemouth that has spotted the price hike for most cars, esp. student mobiles. I never buy here either!

Try North Dorset (Shaftesbury etc.) as there are loads of small diesels run as second cars out that way (strangely enough, most are on Red Diesel... that'll be the farmers then), so you have loads of choice and the s/h prices tend to be down, particularly in your price range.

I believe any supermini with close is 100k on the clock is going to be tired, with the exception of Mk1 Polo, as small cars are not designed to do high mileages. Things like interior on a 10-year-old Clio will be creaky and squeaky, central locking & eletric windows are going to pack-up soonner rather than later. More over safety should be your main concern as you would travel cross country at higher speed. I saw a crash near QE2 hospital the other week and the girl's 106 was shorten by at least one foot whereas the Mondeo has only superficial damages to bumper and lights. It was a head-on in town, I guess both parties cannot be doing much more than 20mph.

When I got my last car back in 00, I was looking for Ford Mondeo 1.6 GLX (ins. gp. 7) and Peugoet 405 1.6 GRI (ins. gp. 5 but with the 1.6 205GTI engine). They were the fastest car I could get at that insurance group. I settle with the Ford in the end, but a 1.8 (gp 9) rather than a 1.6, ran it for 45k and it worked out to be 20ppm all inclusive (ins., tax, depreciation, maintenance, etc.). All servicing done by Ford to keep up the history, nothing went wrong except it needed a new gaiter at one of the MoT.

For other back-roomers' information, my nissan qx has now done just over 6k since I last reported. My current and projected ppm for the coming year are 18.6 and 19.7 and I get 28mpg. I am very happy with it and surprised to find it is cheaper to run than the mondeo! I have taken it to road rallying twice so far and am getting used to the LSD fitted to front axle.

My next car will definitely be on LSD!

Best,
Garrison

£1300!!! I'm gonna start buying them at £300. Is this the easiest way to make a grand?
Caz wants to buy a Clio - DavidHM
It would be if you could get them for £300... maybe as a particularly stroppy salesman offering a p/x but otherwise, no chance. I saw a K-plate, 74k 1.4 RT automatic, in good but not incredible condition, go at auction for £1200 a month or so back.
Caz wants to buy a Clio - Mental Mike
It might have reached that amount because it was a small automatic. A few years ago I saw a metro automatic go for nearly a grand when it was only worth a couple of hundred. My theory is that some private punters come to auctions desperate for an auto. If there are only 2 or 3 cars there they'll pay over the odds.

In October I remember seeing average P reg clios going for about a grand. Don't know if prices have gone up or down since.
Caz wants to buy a Clio - DavidHM
I agree that £1200 is a lot of money at auction - I think you're right, small automatics are in a world of their own. Mileage is everything, and the people buying them often have no idea what they're getting.

I'd still find it hard to believe that a good early Clio with the right spec (1.4 RT, with electric windows, remote stereo, remote locking, soft velour seats and so on) would go for less than £600 and probably quite a lot more.

Garrison - interesting idea about the Mondeo but how many blonde 19 year olds would even get in one as a passenger? :-) I think the usual criteria are out the window here and girliness counts for everything.

I'll have a look out for one tonight.
Caz wants to buy a Clio - Gazza
Hey David, I had a new girlfriend during that period and she is inpressed with the ability and capability of the Mondeo!!!

Having said that, she was ... err, either scared or shocked ... when I took her along to a night rally. She never thought a Mondeo can be hassled along the yellow and white roads on OS Maps at 80-100mph.

FYI: A-roads are red, B-roads are orange, C-roads are yellow, tracks are white and she is a brunette.

cheers for looking for me, but i think that bognor regis is a bit far away, (Im not sure though as im bad at geography) but i dont really have much transport.
saying that though, that clio seems to be very fairly priced and is what im looking for really. how many miles away is it?
Caz wants to buy a Clio - No Do$h
Caz,

Bognor is about 70 miles from Bournemouth, straight along the A31/M27/A27. Turn right at Chichester.

Used to live in Blinkin' Bognor (went to school there) and now live in Poole. Have family up that way so do the trip quite often.

On a clear weekend you should allow 90 minutes. Oh, and it's only about 45 miles from Haywards Heath, if that.

No Dosh

Caz - have you decided yet (I assumed you were a Caroline or a Karen or something but I wasn't sure)? It's fun trying to find the best bargain in the best condition, but all said and done, your big expense won't be buying a car, but getting it shipshape, running it and insuring it.

Sorry Garrison, I think it was my comment about the Mondeo that got you.

She wants a Clio, or something similar, that is going to be practical for the journey between Hemel and Bournemouth, as well as cute, fun and cheap.

My point was that, while early (and late) Mondeos are great cars, think of what cars blokes on here usually recommend: Omegas, Volvos, Mondeos, plus the Yaris which is the standard recommendation for girls. I'm generalising a lot I know, but I just meant that young female drivers see Mondeos as old men's cars, which is a shame but probably accurate.

Out of interest, girlfriends' cars that I remember have been Unos, Polos, and the like, if they've bothered driving at all. Two of my mates keep buying Citroën AXs for theirs though. Clearly Caz wants something small and a bit girly; I wasn't saying that a 1.4 Clio is a babemobile or anything like that.
19-yo blonde + Clio = ?? - Gazza
I agree with you in principal. My girlfriend thinks that only 206 and Yaris are cool though. She thinks Clio, Punto, etc. are dull and Fiesta and Corsa are s*_!.

In fact, I think that was the reason she wrote-off her Fiesta a few years back. When the police recovered it from a ditch and rolled it back the right way up, only three wheels touched the ground. What a fantastic crash and very luck for me not in the car at the time.
